Highlights of University of Georgia History

Georgia’s largest university enrolls over 30,000 students every year. Athens is the school’s location, about 60 miles south of Atlanta. It is not only the biggest, but also the oldest-chartered state university in the nation. The United States’ system of public higher learning was founded from this.

1785- The Georgia General Assembly charters a college on 40,000 acres that were set aside by Georgia’s Legislature.

1802- The University of Georgia, founded by Abraham Baldwin.

1843 – Law studies became part of the curriculum.

1872- After receiving federal funding, classes are expanded again to cover the study of agricultural and mechanical arts.

Auburn University plays Georgia in football at 1892, marking the beginning of “The Deep South’s Oldest Rivalry.”

1893- The beginning of intense rivalry between UGA (Georgia Tech) marks the beginning of hostilities. (Georgia lost, 28-6).

1900 – There were fewer than 60 graduates in the graduating class.

1915- Georgia beats the University of Florida in the matchup at Jacksonville. “World’s Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party.”

1919 – Mary E. Creswell was the University’s first woman graduate with a Home Economics degree. Later, she would serve as the dean of school.

1920: The Bulldog was chosen as the mascot.

1929 – Yale University and Sanford Stadium hosted the first ever football match.

1942- University of Georgia Bulldogs win their first Southeastern Conference Championship.

1961: The University is officially integrated. Its two first African-American students become a doctor and a journalist who has won numerous awards.

1996- UGA hosted several Olympic events that were held as part of the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta.

2007- Georgia’s athletes, including football, basketball, hockey, swimming and track have combined to win 127 SEC titles and 31 National Championships.

A long and rich history of the University of Georgia has created a wealth of traditions for football lovers. UGA, Georgia’s Mascot dog is an example. UGA is currently in its sixth form, UGA VI. UGA attends all Georgia sporting events and is especially important for football fans. UGA V is one of the most prominent and well-known mascots. He was featured on the Sports Illustrated cover, in the Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil movie, and in several media spots.

Georgian football fans are the most intense and committed fans. University of Georgia is a top-ranked public university in Georgia. This includes its exciting marching band and athletic team.
