A bunker shot can be the single shot in golf that causes fear. You don’t need to worry about bunker shots, as they are very simple once you learn the fundamental principles of playing them.
Here are eight basic skills that I recommend. Practice and patience can help you play those bunkers shots regularly and make you look forward to your next chance to practice them.
Eight Basic Strategies for Playing Bunker Shots
1. You must have a strong foundation for bunkers shots. This will ensure that your swing is stable and you don’t slip or move too much. Once you are comfortable, you can rest your feet until the support is complete. N.b. The more foundation required, the longer the bunker shot.
2. Use an Open Stance to help you control the ball better and achieve a greater trajectory. You will be able to see the shot clearly.
3. Open Clubface – Make sure to leave the clubface open at your address in order for bunker shots to have more elevation. This will allow them to fall softer onto the greens.
4. You should weight favor the left side. This helps you keep your control, and also prevents too much movement.
5. Upright Swing Plane- This allows you to move the club beyond the line intended and then back following the same route. It will create a steeper plane that can be used to increase control and elevation.
6. To strike the ball, aim 2 to 4 inches back.
7. To ensure that the ball rises to the desired height, keep your clubface up through impact.
8. Accelerate the ball through your swing – ensure you are always speeding through it at impact. Slowing down can only cause the ball to go back into the bunker.
