Hawaii: How to pack your bags
Airline companies are charging more for second luggage pieces than they used to, with some even charging the cost of the entire first piece. “50 pounds per piece of luggage”Travelers who are careful about their weight should plan well in advance to prevent expensive baggage fees. My motto was “I used to travel with the motto “Don’t check your baggage unless you can afford to lose it; if you can afford to loose it, don’t bring it”Therefore, I have never taken more than one piece of luggage with me when I traveled. Although it’s always best to travel lightly, the stricter new limits on carry-ons and my growing age have made it difficult for me to carry more than my one-piece of luggage. You need to be smart about packing so you pack less.
Make sure you are careful with your baggage Many airlines permit you to carry one handbag and one personal item, like a purse or a laptop. This is why I bring a laptop and a bag with me. It also includes room for my camera, SLR Camera, and emergency clothes. They usually allow me to do this. My luggage has lost more times than my memory can recall, so I carry my camera with me and all my clothing in my bag. This bag also contains a quarter of a gallon of water, which I purchased at the airport after security inspection. It also includes some snacks.
A minimum of one book should be brought on the flight. Tickets, reservations confirmations, lists of numbers, extra glasses, medication, and list must all be in waterproof bags.
Keep in mind that you can purchase more books and memory cards at Wal-Mart on-island or Costco off-island for as little as $10. You don’t have to overpack your bags with additional items. You should protect film that you have packed in your luggage against radiation.
You can plan for your activities:There may be certain activities you want to do in Hawaii. If so, make sure that you pack the right gear. People often bring their own snorkel gear to help save money. It is not a good idea to bring your own gear if you end up paying extra for luggage. Renting snorkel gear is quick, simple and inexpensive on the island. It is also possible to rent diving equipment and golf clubs. Horseback riding and hiking require specific clothing. However, if you prepare well, all you need is your hiking/riding boots, and a pair of trousers and shirts that are appropriate for the activity. Remember that mountain tops can get very cold, even in the snowy and rainy season. Plan ahead to pack appropriately. To save space and weight on your bag, you should bring boots. I don’t recommend bringing expensive equipment, such as musical instruments or photography gear. You can lose your camera, guitar or laptop if you don’t check it regularly.
Take into consideration the weatherTemperatures at sea level are tropical. They vary just 10 degrees each day, and all year. You can get hot in the afternoon so make sure to pack a light and cool outfit. The windsward side of the sun is typically rainy. “up-country”Afternoon showers are common for mountain communities. Evenings are pleasantly cool, especially up-country. There is usually an evening breeze or ocean breeze. You can have a wardrobe that covers all of these scenarios with forethought and not be too bulky, heavy, or overly ornate.
More details: Hawaii is a place where suits are not necessary. Even Circuit Court Judges wear Aloha Shirts underneath their robes. A nice shirt, generally an Aloha Shirt, and a pair of khakis are the wardrobe of choice at the finer restaurants and nightclubs–everywhere else, it’s shorts and sandals. A total wardrobe should consist of a polo-style top, a few Aloha Shirts, a pair of long khakis, three pairs of shorts, and a couple of tank tops. For women, a sundress or skirt may be more appropriate. You will only need sandals for footwear. Your feet are going to be hot.
You will love how refreshing it is to be in the warm tropics. Bring at least two swimsuits. Swimming suits don’t dry quickly overnight so it is better to have a suit that’s warm and dry than one that’s cold.
For those who plan to ride horses or explore the high elevations of Mauna Kea and Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, make sure you bring jeans and hiking boots, as well as a sweater, windbreaker, and lightweight rain jacket or jacket. It’s always good to have a compact umbrella for travel.
Make sure to bring your personal toiletries. Carry-on is fine for medications. You can also bring sunblock, sunglasses, sunscreen, and sunburn cream, which will help make your trip more enjoyable. If you do not have the space, they are easily available locally.
Aside: If you start to feel thirsty while in Hawaii, then you have waited too many years to get water. Conversely, if your skin starts to feel warm, that means you don’t need sunblock. You should drink more water than your body needs, and apply sunblock before going out. Your body will not warn you if it encounters more extreme climates.
People plan well in advance and leave enough room for souvenirs and other gifts. However, modern restrictions on luggage weight make it difficult to do so. My trip is instead planned. I go through all my clothes the month prior to my departure. I only take one set of clothes, and I donate the rest to the charity shop. These clothes are then left behind at the end, so I have enough room in my suitcase to store any items I purchase. The U.S. Post Office offers flat-rate shipping boxes at very affordable rates.
