Upington Tourist Information

Located at an elevation of 2742 feet in the Northern Cape Province of South Africa, is the present town of Upington. This station, which was established in 1875 as a mission station to stabilize an area that had been ravaged by wars for many years, was first requested by the local chief. Sir Thomas Upington (the first Attorney-general in the Cape Colony), visited the area in 1879 and established a station that used camels for patrolling the large desert areas. The town of Upington was eventually formed by the combination of the police outpost and mission station in 1884. The first structures were built by Reverend Christian Schroder on the Orange River’s northern bank. Because of the high number of immigrant population, irrigation was required by the nearby river. Ten years after completion of the mission station, the first canals were built.

Over a century later, Upington remains a tourist’s paradise with many great attractions. Now, the town museum occupies the former mission station. The museum now houses the donkey statue in honor of the animals contribution to the area’s development. Rev. These walls also contain Edward Terry’s 1615 journal. The town offers many amenities, including a coffee shop where you can enjoy local products as well as scenic views over the Orange River. Upington, which is also the largest center, is one of South Africa’s most beautiful sites, Augrabies Falls. A number of parks are available within the reserve, where anyone can appreciate the stunning terrain and natural environment of the African animals. The Spitskop Nature Reserve is located 13km north of Upington. It’s a small reserve that was named for Upington’s granitekoppie. You can see animals such as the zebra, springbok and red hartebeest while driving through the reserve. The reserve is easily accessible via a variety of hiking trails.
