How do you think about the course and what kind of personality are you? Your ability to think your way around the golf course or bring lots of emotion to the game can have benefits and drawbacks for how you play and, perhaps, how you manage it. You can adjust your personality to improve your game.
There are two types of personality: high-thinkers and high-emotion players. The high thinker uses their intellect and golf skills to navigate the course. If your thinking and ability to execute it is superior to your competitors, you have an advantage. However, players have a tendency to overthink the game. They can tweak things constantly and not be able to commit to one shot. Players with high emotions are more successful. “feel”They can score some great shots when they’re on a roll. It will prove difficult for them to get back on track if something happens. These two types of psychological traits are used to divide golfers.
These personality characteristics are broken down by psychologists into four kinds of golfers.
1. These players are high thinkers and have high emotions. These players not only are great students of the game but bring a high level of emotion to their games. Bobby Jones or Tiger Woods were great technical golfers and brought lots of emotion to the game. Both were great players, but Woods changed his game throughout his career, so Jones gave up competitive golf early on because of his emotional toll.
2. People who think a lot but have low emotions. These players could be described as cool, but calculated. Jack Nicklaus is a good example. Rarely have we ever seen a golfer that was focused on the game, yet he showed emotion. Ben Hogan might also fit this description.
3. High emotions, low thinkers It’s fun to see players who are willing to go hard, hit the ground and let it fly. This category includes John Daley and Arnold Palmer.
4. Low thinking, low emotions. They don’t seem to care about the outcome of their shots and have very little emotional clutter. These players are able to accept what happens and just get out there and play. Fred Couples and Ernie Els seem to be popular because they are beautiful, swinging men with a carefree approach.
It is clear that all personality types can make successful golfers. But it’s important not to be too aggressive with them. The best thinkers have generally had better results. To improve your chances of being a good player, there are some things you can do to make your personality more appealing. For example, if your emotions get in the way of playing well, you should not accept your situation. Instead, look at ways that you can improve. These will be addressed in another post.
