Harry Vardon: The Championship British Golf Player’s Early Life

A new Windows Media Format video titled Harry Vardon: Jersey’s Favorite Golfing Son, covers Harry Vardon’s childhood and early years as a young man on the Channel Island of Jersey.

As a Jersey Museum witness, Harry Vardon is highly revered on his island. This is where you will find a permanent exhibition donated by his wife, featuring the medals of golfer Harry Vardon from 1890 to 1914.

Vardon was raised on the eastern coast of the island, near Gorey Harbour and Mont Orgueil’s impressive medieval castle. He kept a close eye on France’s coast. Along with the Royal Bay of Grouville, given the Royal status by Queen Victoria, this area makes up the neighbourhood to Grouville common where as a baby and child Harry Vardon and his parents lived at Amité Lodge. It was once one of many small cottages, but it has since been demolished. Today, however, the Jersey stone block is located on the 12th green of the golf course. Although the letters have begun to lose their paint from the cold, they tell the story of how the great golfer was created. The video shows Vardon’s biggest triumphs. Harry’s father was employed by one of several shipyards which could be found along the island’s coast in olden times of wooden-constructed ships. However, the steamship industry was in decline by the 1960’s. Harry’s dad was forced to work as a garden laborer and other odd jobs man. However, the Vardon family lived on the common. They were, however, unhappy that their peaceful surroundings had been disturbed in 1877 when they received permission to build a golf course on the ground running to the waters edge.
