Cigars: Tobacco growing

There’s Tobacco everywhere

To make cigars, tobacco can be grown anywhere in the world. This includes South Africa to Poland, Argentina to Canada, and westbound to Mexico to produce it. However, cigar tobaccos tend to be grown in intertropical regions.

Tobacco Origin

It is a native American plant that has been recognized as tobacco. Some of the species have been identified in South Pacific. Many species exist in a variety of varieties. They aren’t all used for smoking. Many of these plants can be grown to ornamental use, with their blooms showing a range of colors, from light red to purple.

These are the countries where tobacco can be grown to make your cigars.

Argentina

Argentina has dark, air-cured tobacco. It is found in Corrientes and Misiones provinces. Salta also grows flue-cured tobacco. The production of Burley is also possible in Misiones. Although these tobaccos are used mostly for smoking, Corrientes is also popular for making short-filler cigars. Argentina was once a major producer and exporter. However, changes to the income and economic tax policies severely damaged its production and made it too costly to compete on an international level. As a result, the production volume has decreased.

Brazil

Brazil is the biggest tobacco country in the world. Bahia’s East Central State, located 100 miles west from Salvador da Bahia the capital city, is a significant area in cigar production. This active port at the Atlantic Coast can be found about 100 mi away. A production is located in the Northern State of Alagoas, where maduro wrappers can be found. Santa Catarina, Rio Grande do Sul, and Santa Catarina are the southern states that produce tobacco to pipe or cigarettes.

Cameroon

Cameroon is home to Cameroon cigar wrappers. This area extends beyond the border to the East, and into Central African Republic. Small farmers grow wrappers by air without the use of pesticides or fertilizers. One acre is the average size of a plantation. The country received the Sumatra seed shortly after WWII. The tobacco was first grown for French Monopoly purposes. It was then offered to the international market after the production exceeded the limit. Cameroon wrapper production was greatly appreciated by European cigar makers and American giants. However, poor management caused Cameroon wrapper manufacturing to drop during the 1980s. The quality and quantity of Cameroon wrappers is not as good today.

China

China is China’s largest tobacco producer with 5,000,000 metric tons. The USA is next with approximately 1,000,000 metric tons. Chinese tobacco can be flue-cured, but it is not fragrant and has a sharp taste. This isn’t suitable for making cigars. This tobacco is mostly used in local cigarette smoking. It is also exported in small quantities. The tobacco is imported by the cigarette industry and used as a cheap and neutral filler.

Connecticut, USA

Connecticut Valley is a Northeastern region of the USA that is known for its brightly colored cigar wrapper. The tobacco is grown in shade because of the hot, sunny summer. Anyone who has flown above Hartford, CT could have noticed the large white fields and white clothing covering the tobacco plants. The huge, cathedral-like barns that are ready to be used for flue curing. Impressive!

Cuba

Cuba is home to a wide variety of tobacco. My premium cigar was made from Vuelta Abajo West, where the best tobacco is grown. The Remedios, Oriente provinces in Central Cuba produce tobacco that isn’t supposed to be accepted for the cigar everyone calls a Havana.

Dominican Republic

Dominican Republic is an old tobacco-growing nation. A Cuban seed was used to grow tobacco. It was popularized as an alternative to the Cuban tobacco, which was banned from entering the USA in the 1960’s. The Cuban exiles were able to do a tremendous job. Piloto Cubano tobacco is full-bodied but lacks some aroma. Piloto Cubano is a 100% Dominican cigar that has been blended with Olor dominicano, which is more aromatic. These Dominican varieties are excellent components of multi-origin blends.

East Mediterranean countries

Oriental tobacco is sun-cured and grown in the Eastern Mediterranean Sea countries. The main producers are Turkey, Greece and Bulgaria, although Lebanon, Syria and Macedonia are also being grown. The leaves of this tobacco are small, sometimes measuring only 2 inches. Sun curing results in a yellowish appearance and high levels of sugar. The aroma is rich, and the addition of a little oriental tobacco to a blend can make a big difference in taste. It isn’t used in long-filler cigars. This tobacco can be used only for short filler cigarettes and cigars.

Ecuador

Ecuador is the best place to grow wrappers because it’s on the Equator. It also has fertile soils. With a cloudy sky that is almost constant, the weather provides natural shade. This protects the wrapper plants and allows the tobacco to become thin and lighter. Ecuador provides Connecticut and Sumatra wrappers for many cigar factories in the world.

Honduras

Honduras is a country that has a reputation for producing premium cigars. It is not a large producer of tobacco and its premium cigars are made mostly from imported leaf. Honduras is a potential player and has the ability to produce tobacco wrappers.

Indonesia

There are many places where tobacco can be grown, but the best cigars come from Sumatra or Java. Sumatra Wrappers can be found all over the world. Central Java (Vorstenland), and East Java, (Besuki), produce a lot of fillers and wrappers. Indonesia is the country that produces most of the cigar tobacco.

Mexico

Mexico produces dark-air-cured tobaccos. They are primarily produced in Vera Cruz province and Tampico on the East Coast of the Golf. Some production is also found in Yucatan. It used to be a state-owned business, but it’s now owned by individuals and cooperatives. Mexican tobacco is extremely dark, and some of the finest leaves are suitable for maduro wrappers. There is an interesting Sumatra-seed wrapper production in San Andres de Tuxtla, Vera Cruz.

Philippines

Tobacco production in Philippines is concentrated on the Northern side of Luzon. Dark tobacco is traditionally grown for cigars. In fact, the famous Philippines Cigars were produced under the Compania general de Tabaccos de Filipinas. Their popularity declined due to their mild taste. The Philippines continues to grow dark tobacco, and it has developed flue-cured tobacco that can be used for making blond cigarettes.

Zimbabwe

Zimbabwe, together with Brazil and USA, is one of the most important countries producing high-quality flue-cured cigarettes. Although the country was Rhodesia at the time, the embargo did not affect the country’s production. The embargo made Rhodesians even more creative and allowed them to continue producing. It was this time that neighboring Zambia and Tanzania began to sell a lot of their products. We discovered an amazing organization with the most advanced equipment and technology in the world when the embargo was lifted on 1980. Many young people struggled to get a job as a tobacco worker in Zimbabwe. We won’t talk about the actual Zimbabwean agricultural policy, but it is likely that this country will be taken off the top of the list. As far as the cigar industry is concerned, flue-cured tobaccos will be unaffected. Brazil should be the biggest beneficiary.
