Dave Pelz provided me with one of my best tips for short games a couple years ago. The book he wrote is called “Short Game Bible”This is the standard for short-game instruction in golf. Dave and just about every golf short game instructor. “professional”The world suggests that you know your distance from the flag. It is crucial that we know how far to go to reach the flag. Professional golfers will show you that they aim to be in position where they are able to hit the ball full-length. It is not the reality that weekend players can achieve that goal.
We often find ourselves in situations where a full swing could land us in major trouble, regardless of how lofted the club. Short game practice can be crucial if you want to improve your short game. A short practice area is available on many driving ranges. This is clearly marked by the pin distances. These distances usually run from the practice area to the practice green. But what about when your practice is from 40 or 25 yards? These distances don’t usually get marked. You need to be familiar with these distances in order to create repeatable short swings of different clubs and build your repertoire.
You can visual judge
The first time I heard of this concept, I actually took a 100-foot tape measure to the course. It was very slow so I could take measurements and get an idea. After several holes, I was able tell when I was at 50 yards or whatever yardage was in round terms. It is possible to do this at a practice course so that you can see what 100, 75 or 50 yards looks like. It will take you a while to get the hang of your shorter distances.
After you’ve mastered the art of swinging, it is time to learn how to make a swing. You can find most of the “professionals”This method will be taught in a variation. It is basically this. Do you know the average distance that each one of your wedges, including your 7,8,9 will go with either a quarter, half, or three quarter swing? It might take some time to figure this out, but once you do it will be very useful.
You can make smart decisions when your ball is close to the hole if you have the right information. We’ll be covering more of this in a second, but let us first address a few caveats.
You can learn to swing!
All kinds of opinions will exist about alignment. Arnold Palmer suggested standing open. Others will disagree. To keep your body and shot clear, it is best to have an open alignment. The next step is to make sure that you are not blocking the shot. “professionals”The club-face should always be led by the hands for shorter shots. You should set the ball in front of the target side leg, so that your hands are closer to your target. Left leg for right-handed. With your weight in favor of your target side, you’ll hit the ball through and then finish the pitch shot high. This arrangement will de-loft your club, which will mean that your face will appear like the next lower number of club numbers. It will result in more distance.
Now. Now, imagine you’re a clock.
Your head is 12:01, your feet are 6:06 and your target side 1-5. The back swing is 7-11. You want to find out how far each wedge travels in a swing between 7:30 and 8:00. You can also find the information needed to make a 9:00 swing. Next, you will find the information needed for a 9:00 swing. You’ll find some different wedges can travel different distances for different swings. However, once you’re finished with the bag you now have 12-16 shots you feel confident about making and know what the distances they will take. There will be significant loft differences between shots going the same distance.
Fill Your Arsenal
An example: A 60° lob wedge might travel 25 yards using an 11:00 swing. While a 48° pitching wedge would travel the same distance on an 8:00 swing. The difference is the loft, which takes the lob wedge over the bunker and makes it stop. However, the pitching wedge will continue rolling 10 feet after landing on the green.
Your short game will improve quickly if you have all the shots that are in your bag. It is only necessary to know three swings that are repeatable to make 16 shots. They are easy to hit, but they can be difficult to master.
