Golf Swing: Wrist Cock

Your wrist can either cock or hinge in your backswing. Each golfer has a different way of doing it. For the best results, it is important to swing both directions.

Your palms should be touching, and your fingers must touch. To make your fingers look straight at the sky, hinge your wrists up towards you. The first way you can hinge your wrists is this, which only a golfer would do. This is the method you’d use to hinge your wrists when you chop wood. You would do this by swinging the axe back and forth over your head.

Keep your hands in the same position as before and bend your wrists so that each side of your hand folds backwards. The second is what amateur golfers should be able to do. This is how you’d hold your wrist when you hit a tennis forehand shot.

Why is this important? Because allowing your right arm to fold backwards while you backswing conserves the square alignment of clubface that was at address. This preserves the angle your left hand had at address. When the right arm folds in the backswing, your right wrist should not bend with it. RightThe wrist becomes twisted backwards and the clubface is out of alignment. You would then have to adjust the downswing in order to align the clubface. That is not an easy task.

You will need a drill and mirror to help you learn how the right hand hinges. This drill will show you how to do the new move and what it feels like. You can check your work with the mirror to make sure it’s correct. Because what you need happens behind your back, so you will be able to see how you are doing it. Keep in mind that your right wrist bending backwards while doing this is an effect and not cause. It doesn’t happen by design.

Stress Free Golf Swing

Hold the club in your hands and raise it up. Notice how bendy the left wrist is. Move your arms, shoulders, and hands around until your hands touch the surface of your backswing. Do not allow the bend of your left wrist to change. Your right wrist will be bent inwards. This is the right thing to look for. You want this wrist hinge to be a part of your swing.

Standing with the mirror at your side, swing up to the top. Keep the left hand still in the address position and let the right one hinge forward. Although it’s not difficult, if your right wrist has been hinging, you may feel a little strange. This can be done every day to get used to it. You should also keep looking in the mirror for confirmation that you’re following the correct procedure.

It’s the downswing that pays off. When you are starting to slide, hold this position until your swing’s momentum forces it out. When the hands are at about hip level, that is when it will be released. If the right wrist does not bind, the right side of the hand can be inserted into the ball. It will provide power and accuracy that is unmatched.
