What happens at impact determines your golf swing power. The correct position of your wrist at impact is crucial if you are to make long, consistent shots. For right-handed players, the ideal impact position requires your left wrist be flat while your right is bent.
Unfortunately, many golfers experience the opposite at impact. This creates short shots and the ball will not travel the same distance no matter what golf club is used. Here’s a drill that will help you to get in a perfect impact position using your wrists.
Ok, let’s begin…
You should first practice power chipping. You will need to practice power chipping by setting up a shot like you would normally, and taking the club with you without damaging your wrists.
You should only swing the club back about a foot and when the club is at the ball, I ask that you make sure that your left wrist and right wrist are flat at impact. Stop and verify that you did this at the end of your chipping swing. Keep practicing until your chipping swing is consistent. It is vital.
You don’t have to be concerned about how your chip shots turn out. The impact of the chip shots is all that matters.
Once you are comfortable with the chipping swing, you can move on to longer swings. However, you should ensure that your right hand is straight and your left wrist flat at impact.
It is a good idea to start by practicing a swing that places your left arm parallel to your ground. You should also practice longer golf swings so that you are able to check the impact position.
You must master this golf swing drill if you wish to strike powerful, penetrating shots. You’ll hit weak shots if your left wrist bends when you touch the ball, as many golfers do.
Imagine a boxer with bent wrists punching. You would think they’d break their wrists doing that. While you can’t hurt your wrists by hitting the ball with bent left hands, golf will not allow you to hit it as far as possible. You will also find that not every iron you use can go as far, which I already stated. Also, if you bend your left wrist at impact, your golf swing will not be as good.
Don’t assume this and practice the golf swing drill that I suggest to improve your left wrist position when you hit the ball. Flat wrists are the norm for the most skilled ball strikers. Do this drill and you will reap the benefits of making better golf shots.
