Alvor, a fishing community and old port in the western Algarve is at the mouth the River Alvor. Alvor, located just 5 miles away from Portimao and 12 miles from Lagos, and approximately 40 miles from Faro is a popular choice for families and couples who are looking to enjoy a peaceful resort and uncrowded beaches. It is slightly smaller than the other Algarve resorts, but it still mixes the traditional with modern. It is home to many of the traditional fishermen’s houses, which form the heart of the narrow streets. Alvor offers many things to do for those on cheap Portugal holidays, such as a sandy beach and fishing harbor, along with a waterfront promenade and the remains of a castle from 13th-century, and a church from 16th-century. The bus that runs between Alvor and both resorts takes you to Portimao or Praia do Rocha.
Alvor’s stunning, 4 mile-long stretch of sandy beach is surrounded by good facilities. It is also less crowded that other Algarve beaches. Alvor’s beach offers many water activities. Between Alvor and Portimao there are many beaches, including Praia do Rocha. For those who prefer quieter beaches, there’s Praia dos Tres Irmaos. It nestles beneath the red cliffs. Praia do vau is a small beach with a cove called Prainha.
There are many activities for all ages, including horse riding, golf and the local waterpark. It is possible to golf during 2-month periods in Alvor’s climate. Alvor, often called a ‘golfers paradise’ has more than 30 excellent golf courses. You can take lessons at any of the Alvor riding centers.
Alvor is very popular among hikers as well as walkers. It’s a great place to visit during the winter when there are still plenty of sun and warm temperatures. Walking enthusiasts can enjoy the stunning views as they stroll along the estuary, walk on the beach and explore the surrounding villages. On their holidays there are many wonderful excursions that the entire family will love, including Joao da Areus’ caves and grottos as well as Abidaca’s charming little village. The Monchique Mountains and Silves Castle are just a few of the other attractions. Family vacations to Portugal include boat tours from Portimao or Praia do Rocha. The family can spend a day at one of the area’s water parks, where they will enjoy swimming in the pools and sliding down to relax before heading out to the bars and restaurants.
Alvor is a great place to cycle, even during the winter. Cycling is an enjoyable way to see the surroundings and it’s easy because of its quiet roads.
