The Art of Negative Thinking: The Delusion of Perfection

Many golfers with a mid- to high handicap are not able to afford to practice thousands of balls. However, every player can learn to have an attitude that will allow them to play consistently to their best.

You can improve your life by developing positive beliefs.

Which definition of consistency would you use?

Your definition depends on expectations. Maybe modifying your expectations might help you see that you’re more consistent than what you believe.

Many of my students believe consistency is synonymous with success. They want to break 95, 90, or 85. The next step after you set a goal, in terms of scoring, is to discover the mental blocks that keep you from reaching your goals.

How does your score change based on the quality of the shots?

The best shots happen by chance. They are rare but beautiful. The chances of hitting a perfect shot are not known. However, it is not impossible to make mistakes. IfNot a typo, WhereA poor shot will manifest.

You can minimize the negative effects of a poor shot and still be consistent. Although you never know what the outcome will be, it’s possible to minimize your chances of losing more than one stroke mentally.

Stress Free Golf Swing

Play by feeling, not following a set of rules. Bogey golf is the best way to score in the nineties. Breaking ninety becomes easy when you remove double-bogeys.

It’s not about hitting better shots, consistency is about reducing the severity and inconsistency of poor shots.

Bad shots are not uncommon. This may seem like negative thinking at first. Give yourself enough imperfect shots to get through a round. For those who score below ninety, I recommend starting with ten. As you get better, the number can be reduced.

The way you feel about golf will influence how well your swing works. You can improve your chances of creating smoother swings by feeling better.

Do you think it would be better to let yourself make poor shots than to constantly demand perfection?

It isn’t a one-size fits all concept. Some of the best players in the world understand that the game is unpredictable. The most valuable lesson you can take from world-class players is to be able to accept the fact that the game will never be the same.
