If one thinks of the Drakensberg as being an ideal conference location, the first thing that comes to mind is the Main Route through Central Berg to Northern Drakensberg. It is clear that this area, from Pietermaritzburg to the Free State, is well stocked with 3- and 4-star resorts. Each one offers excellent conference rooms and decent accommodation. KZN’s Drakensberg is split into three regions: the Northern, Central and Southern Drakensberg. The Northern Drakensberg continues the Central Drakensberg, and is bordered by the Free State at the Champagne Valley. It is the continuation of Winterton’s Champagne Valley and Mont-aux-Sources (the highest point in the Berg at 3,300ft). You will find the Royal Natal National Park in the North. The Southern Berg Golf Club. A short drive away from Pietermaritzburg is the famous Drakensberg Gardens Hotel 18-hole golf course. It also offers large conference facilities as well as ample accommodation. This camp site is part of the Gooderson Group, and it’s managed by the hotel. It’s well maintained and has all the amenities you need. You will also find numerous smaller hotels and campsites along the route with breathtaking views and trout fishing opportunities, wild animals, and beautiful terrain. This unspoiled area retains its beauty and uniqueness, despite being crowded with tourists. For those who want to ride the Gateway to Africa, to climb the mountain to Lesotho via road, to “The Highest Pub In Africa”, they will be able to enjoy the scenic route, a delicious meal at “The Highest Pub”, and then return to Sani Pass Hotel for a relaxing evening at the top. For this short distance, passports are necessary. This route requires 4×4 vehicles.
Sani Pass, a stunning mountain road which is well-known as an entry point to Lesotho for South Africans from South Africa is the Sani Pass. Sani Pass serves as the border between Kwazulu Natal and Lesotho. This road requires a 4X4 vehicle, especially in bad weather. You should never underestimate the possibility of weather changes in Lesotho. It is common knowledge that four seasons can be experienced in one day.
This beautiful region of Berg is ideal for trekking or tramping. Stop at every charming spot along the route.
Underberg accommodation –
The ideal base for exploring Southern Drakensberg is Underberg. Southern Drakensberg has more opportunities for fly-fishing than any other area in South Africa. There are three golf courses in Underberg, and there is plenty of river rafting opportunities. The area also offers horse trails and polo field activities.
