Your spouse has just died. Aside from not being a keen golfer, your free time is now and you want to learn more. You feel like a little outcast because your friends are avid golfers. Now the real question: “Am I too old to start playing golf?”
Simply put, no! You have to realistically assess your skill levels, but golf can be played by all skill levels, beginner through expert. It’s never too late to learn the wonderful game of golf. It will be a great opportunity to enjoy time on the course with your spouse and friends, or to travel and play at beautiful golf courses around the country.
Two things are necessary to start:
1. You can learn from them. You don’t have to go with your friends and just ask them for some advice. Although you may be able improve your game, it is likely that you will quickly become frustrated. You can improve your golf skills by contacting a professional golf instructor. Each golf course offers private lessons. A clinic is an option, but it’s best to take some private lessons in order for you to receive the personalized attention that you deserve.
2. Learn golf etiquette. Some new golfers feel intimidated or unsure by golf’s informal rules. There is no need to feel intimidated. However, you should be able to understand basic golf etiquette to avoid causing any upset to others. Many golfers will be patient with beginners who miss the shot. If you’re not paying attention to the shadows of your friends on the fairway, moving around while they play, and other poor etiquette, then they may get annoyed. You can ask one of your golfer buddies for a list of good etiquette. Take a walk with some friends to see what they do. It’s a great way to get fit and also learn how the game works.
Playing when there is less traffic on the course can help you to be more relaxed. This will allow you to relax and not feel pressured about slowing down your play. It’s okay to just pick up your ball when you have trouble on a particular hole if you are just getting started. Play should not be slowed down. This is not only disrespectful to the other golfers but it will also be stressful for you. Just pick up your golf ball, then sit back and enjoy the game with your friends on the next green.
When you are just beginning, don’t be concerned about how your score is going. Just enjoy the game. Soon you’ll be hooked on golf. It only takes one shot to make it addictive. The game of golf is great and does not discriminate by age.
