Dan, my son asked me a few days ago when we’d start. “tennis season.”Dan seemed to have a little bit of spring fever, and I can’t blame him. Since our last tennis training, I seem to have been spending too much time watching television and snacking. It was hot last summer, and Dan and I both needed to drink cold water to continue our training. This got me thinking.
Furthermore, we no longer enjoy or are required to participate in fun physical activities. This is why many are becoming more active and losing weight. Do you remember when as a child you loved to be outside and get out on the first day of spring? You loved to compete with your neighbor at H.O.R-S.-E, or to hit a tennis ball against the wall at the park. There were many other games you could play. There were two options: would you do a basketball or baseball workout? It occurred to me that there could be both. Even girls that didn’t enjoy sports would be willing to take up kickball. Kickball. Kickball is a sport with a circle ball?
Was that your youthful energy? Everything seemed to drain it. A desk job? Yes. School? Uh huh. What about expert advice that walking on a treadmill, or lifting weights for hours is the best way of getting in shape? Yup. “No pain, no gain”, right? It doesn’t need to be this way. It can still be enjoyable to exercise. When you play tennis with your husband or your son, you will see the fun in it. Give it a shot. Take a moment to laugh at yourself. You won’t die.
Dan’s question made me think more about my own situation. I also realized that people need more exercise, but they want something more fun than a nautilus or cycling class. I saw the answer staring back at me. Literally. My son was looking at me with a mixture of excitement and confidence, as though he were saying something.”This is the year I am going to finally beat my dad on the tennis court.”
After a winter of snow and cold, I must admit that any outdoor activity is welcome. The competitive nature of tennis was what woke me up from winter sleep. This is the kind of feeling that desk prisoners need to feel as much as they can. Although the first few sessions of golf or tennis may be a reminder that we’re not sports stars, we don’t need to become heroes. We just need to play the same games as when we were children. Fun games. It is good for our health to compete against ourselves and others. We feel happier when we reach our goals. Improving your skills could help you shed weight or make friends and family closer. It’s not possible to achieve this with treadmill exercises.
