A bouncer is able to experience the world most people can’t imagine. As a bouncer, you spend nights and weekends in smokey bars. You observe bar patrons as they drink to impair their judgments and find better sex. It is your job to stop fights and protect others. You can find yourself in a dangerous or boring job. Even a bouncer must train smartly and responsibly in order to do his job well. These are some tips to help you train so that you have the right strength, cardio, and skills for whatever job you may be assigned as a bouncer.
Weight Training
If you want to become a successful bouncer, your first step is to build strength and size. Your mere existence will suffice to stop most conflicts if you are strong enough. Sometimes, however, you will need strength and power to subdue or control others. You should include the compound heavy movements bench press, deadlifts (squats), rows, shoulder pressess, skull crushings, row, shoulder presses, rows, barbell biceps curls and deadlifts in your lifting routine. To build functional strength, keep your repetitions in the 5- to 10-range.
Cardiovascular Training
There is nothing worse than gassing while battling a 300-pound, drunken patron at a bar on concrete floors. It can drain your body of its resources by having to engage in brief but very intense arguments. You should do 20-30 minutes of cardio training after each exercise. There is no need for you to be intense – walking three miles at a moderate incline of 2% per hour will suffice. You will not only be able to use your lung capacity in times of stress, but you’ll also improve your cardiovascular fitness and general health.
Proper Training
There is one aspect of being a bouncer you should not forget – safety. It is also important for bouncers to attend a 2-4 week training course on how to properly take down and hold bar patrons. This will ensure that they are not causing them any serious injury. Your bar could be sued and you will likely lose your job. You and your patron will be protected if you enroll in a self defense course that focuses on safe, secure takedowns.
It is the old rule that bounces are good for you. “if there isn’t a fight for three weeks – start one!”It is true that there are many people in the industry who will cause confrontations to show management they have a need to be present. These tactics aside, a well-trained, strong package will be able to work in the entertainment sector.
