In the second half of the 20th century, the number of manufacturers producing golf balls grew rapidly. Precept was the only brand that controlled most of this market in its early days. To be clear, golf was not as well-known at the beginning of this century. Golf balls and their accessories were much more in demand later. As the demand for quality golf balls and other equipment grew, so did the number golf ball producers, all competing for market share. Within a short time, the market was growing so fast that many manufacturers began to emerge. Although some of these new businesses had to be closed down later, there were still many manufacturers.
The manufacturer list is quite extensive today, as the sport continues to gain popularity. The customers now have an even wider selection to choose from. Prices have been lowered due to fierce competition from golf ball makers. The new ball manufacturers also make cheaper balls that are aimed at amateur golfers and those who may use them in practice.
There are many major golf ball manufacturers today, including Bridgestone Golf (parent firm of Precept), Callaway Golf and Dunlop Sports.
