Golf Basics-The Importance of Visualization

You just need to stick the clubhead onto the ball eventually.

Sometimes you just need to get your head clear and start playing golf.

You can’t stop practicing when it comes time to play. Instead, start your preshot routine and just get the ball in the air.

This sounds easy, but it is not. When I look at people playing their course, over and over, I can see their practice sessions or lessons running through their heads.

Start thinking about how to manage the course, and what you can do in each moment. You must remember that the golf ball goes only where the club directs it. So relax and let the mechanics go. Instead, focus on your swing and the clubface.

It might be a more effective way of putting it: Practice your mechanics, but feel the sensation.

You can easily understand mechanics… just learn a lesson from it and head to the range to reinforce the learning…

Feeling is the place where mid- to high handicappers come together… it’s the part that can’t be left the range mechanics.

You can play with feeling by being more in touch with the way you play each hole. Visualization should be a key part of your pre-shot routine. For a good feeling, visualize what you are doing with every one of your shots.

When working with people, I often use the following analogy: I was a baseball player growing up and all through college. As a pitcher, I was my favorite position. When I was a pitcher, there would be a certain routine that I did before every game. Just like an athlete, there were times when I was strong and others when it wasn’t.

The point is that when I was ready to head off for the bull pen, my only thought was: “It’s time to go compete with what I’ve got today.”You, me and your competition are the only ones who need to know the mechanics.

If you are having trouble getting your game to the practice tee, here’s the thing you can do: Just go with it. When you get to the tee, engage your eyes… Visualize… Command your eyes to focus on each shot.

This is what champion athletes call ‘in the zone. If you are able to accept what you have and be committed to visualization, you can also get in your zone.
