Golf Club Construction: The Irons

The construction of the club can have an impact on how far the golf ball travels and the accuracy of its trajectory.

Golf is a game that requires accuracy. It is useless to pick clubs that offer greater distance but can’t control how the ball travels.

You will improve your skills and be able to play farther.

The sweet spot

Cast irons can be made in one of two ways: forging or casting. Cast irons allow for more errors in hitting the ball and are therefore ideal for beginners. This is because of the sweetness spot, which is the area where the ball touches the ground. You are meant to contact the ball with this sweet spot on the face of the club. The sweet spot on forged irons is smaller than that on cast irons so it’s better for beginners.

Although they are less prone to errors than forged iron clubs, they allow for more accuracy and so are best for the experienced golfer.

Not always bigger is better

A larger head will allow for better swings but will not give you the control to hit the ball perfectly. This can be solved by using medium-sized irons rather than large heads. They will have a larger sweet spot and will allow you to make more accurate swings.

When you are starting out in the sport of golf, borrowing or hiring a set is the best option. After your skill level improves and accuracy becomes acceptable, consider moving to medium-sized heads. You should wait until you are able to purchase a club you love to use for many years.

It’s time to swing for the shaft

The golfer’s swing speed is an important factor when choosing the right material for the shaft. For high-swing speeds golfers, steel shafts work well as they are more stable and rigid. This allows for greater precision in the game. A graphite shaft is the best choice for low-swing speed golfers. They are usually shorter and lighter than steel counterparts and also have greater flexibility.

But it’s not all iron.

Iron is not the only material used to make golf clubs. Iron is made out of three metals, iron, steel and titanium. While titanium is more expensive than iron, its light weight and strength allow for larger heads without the undesirable increase in weight associated with steel or iron. It is a great choice for beginners to this sport. Large heads = big sweet spot. Cast iron is the best choice between stainless steel or iron heads.

Summary

A person who is new to the game of golf should use irons made out of titanium with a large head (large sweetspot) and a graphite shaft. Cast iron will work well if you do not have a titanium-head.

After improving their swing speed, they will be able to move up to iron-head clubs and steel shafts. This will allow them to improve their accuracy.
