The Too Analytical golfer

The majority of golfers I know are extremely analytical. Although not all golfers are analytical, most of them seem to be very analytical about their swings and overall game.

Phillip, who is a 15 handicap, told me. “Sure, I’m analytical. I’m always thinking when I’m on the course. I’m thinking about my pre-shot routine, my set up, my mechanics and if I’m hitting the shot correctly. After I hit the shot I analyze what I did wrong so I can fix it on the next shot.”

“That’s a lot of thinking”He understood. “Yeah, that’s why I called you. I’m trying not to think so much on the course. I think I’m overthinking!”He responded.

  • Think outside the box

This is why golfers often spend so much mental energy on club selection. Take your focus off the game between shots, and instead of focusing on it, try talking to other people, noticing the trees and sky. Recognize the things that make you happy to be on the course!

They describe it as worrying, not thinking. The past and the future are what they worry about. It’s impossible to remember the past and imagine the future. You can only waste your mental energy on them if you project negative thoughts into the future or carry negativity in the past. Reality is here and it will always be.
