Fabrics

You can use whatever fabric you like. A shoe bag is made with approximately half a yard of fabric.

Sturdier fabrics like denim, canvas, slipcover fabric, fake suede, corduroy, etc. These fabrics are great for making sturdy shoes.

Fine fabrics like velour, velvet, cottons, flannels, etc. are good for dressier shoes.

Consider silk and satin for jewelry or lingerie bags. You can also use mesh and terry to make laundry or beach bags.

It is not necessary to lining the bags. However, you can choose to line your bags with a compatible fabric, especially for those who have more sturdy shoes. The best lining is often made from the same material. This is a lined drawstring bag.

It is possible to choose washable fabrics that can be machine washed later.

All fabrics should be preshrunk before being cut.

Drawstrings

For each bag, use a pair 36-inch long leather or decorative shoe laces. You can also make your own fabric and fake suede drawstrings. Ribbon works well.

Sizes

To test the size of your bag, sew one.

Make one bag according to the suggested dimensions. Put the shoe in and test it to ensure that it is snug. Adjust for any shoe or other item by adding or subtracting from its length.

Suggested Sizes

Four pieces of fabric should be cut to create two golf bag bags. Make 4 pieces of the lining measuring 19inches long by 10-1/2inches wide

For a bag that can be used as a golf bag, you will need an additional drawstring bag.

One shoe bag can hold two bowling shoes. Make 2 strips of fabric measuring 20 by 11 inches. Make 2 pieces of lining, each measuring 19 by 5 inches and 10-1/2 feet.

A bag can also be used to store 2 pairs of tennis shoes, or 2 pair of ladies’ dress shoes.

There are many sizes for gym shoes. Measure around your shoe, adjust the fabric and seam allowances according to the shoe’s size.

How to Sew Sewing Technique

You can personalize the drawstring bags with an emblem or special design. You can monogramme the bag or add a sport motif or embroidery design before you stitch. The design should be placed about three inches above the bottom of each of the 20×11 pieces.

Once you have trimmed the bag, put 2 pieces of bag right sides together.

Take measurements and mark the bags on each side 5 inches below the bag’s top.

Start by sewing a 1/2 inch seam around your bag. Stop at the 5 inch mark. Back stitch not. Short stitches are best for the last and first inches.

For the lining, repeat the above steps.

All seams on the bag and the liner should be pressed open.

Unstitched bag sides 5 inches in length should be press under 1/2 inch. To hold, fuse or stitch.

Repeat the process for the lining.

The bag should be turned right-side out

Flip the lining over.

As if making a French seam, machine stitch 1/2″ to the bottom of your lining. This will create a strong edge.

You can turn the wrong side of your lining.

Place the lining in the bag until the top edge is about 1/2 inch lower than the top of the bag.

The top edge of your bag should be folded down to 1/2 inch above the lining.

To create a fold, press this fold.

Then, fold the top edge and press it down so that the sides meet at the bottom.

Securely pin the edge of your fold and then stitch around it.

Stitch 1 inch above your previous stitches to make the casing.

Continue with the reverse side.

Insert Drawstrings

You can slide the drawstrings in the casings using a safety pin, bodkin or safety pin.

You can slide one drawstring between the bags’ front and back. It should end on the same side.

The other drawstring should be inserted starting on the opposite end of the bag. It will slide through the body of the bag’s front and back, ending at that side.

Secure the end of the drawstrings to each other.

This completes the liner drawstring shoe bag.
