Chelsea FC failed to defend its community shield trophy that it was awarded last year. To ensure that the trophy goes to Old Trafford, the Blues lost 3-1 to the Reds.
Manchester United had luck and managed to win the title. The Blues tried their best but failed. The Reds won the match with more goals and had more shots than Chelsea. They also had fewer fouls and had less corner kicks.
Ivanovic made the first attempt at Chelsea in 17 minutes. He nodded Florent Mallowa’s pull-out toward the goal but Edwin Van Der Sar repelled his header. Man.U came back in the 18th minutes, but Wayne Rooney’s 18-yard box kick missed the net narrowly and went free across the line to score a goal kick.
Ji Sung Park hit John Terry with a shot in the 20th minute. The centre referee did not call for a penalty as it was clearly a hand-to-hand match. Valencia won a corner kick for the Reds in the 29th minutes. However, it was not converted by the attackers.
Chelsea scored a goal in the 28th minute. Frank Lampard took it but Michael Essien nodded it over the bar. Florent Malouda got another kick in 33 minutes. Unfortunately, Ivanovic missed it.
Manchester United did draw their first blood in the 41st minute when Wayne Rooney’s pass from the right flank was converted by Valencia to the goal. While the Reds attempted to level before halftime, they refused to give up.
Nani was appointed as Ji Sung Park’s replacement at the end of the second period. Berbatov was denied a chance in the 53rd minutes to make it more goal-worthy. Carlo Ancelotti’s boys won a corner kick at the 53rd minute, but it was not enough to cause any anxiety.
Fabio was replaced in the 70th minutes by Chris Smalling. Chicharito added 2 goals to the score in the 76th minute after connecting Valencia’s right flank pull-out and his body with Chelsea’s net. The Blues responded with gallantry, but missed several opportunities to beg.
In the 73rd minutes, Florent Malouda was substituted by Yossi Benjamin. Ashley Cole was then replaced in the 79th with Yury Zhirkov.
Edwin Van Der Sar pushed Daniel Sturridge’s 18-yard shot into safety in the 82nd minutes. Salomonkalou was able to win one back after Sir Alex Ferguson’s boys succumbed to the pressure in the 83rdminute.
Didier Droga’s 85th-minute shot hit the goalkeeper. In the second minute of extra time, Berbatov lobbied the ball past the Chelsea goalkeeper to seal victory.
