When I was 17 years old, I first saw Moe Norman. He was playing at Pinewood Park in North Bay, Ontario. There he was with four golf balls and was hitting each one. Then he pointed to the crowd, showing them where the ball went. Believe me they hit every target from 250 yards to 280 yards! It was amazing!
This was a pudgy and poorly dressed guy with terrible teeth who hit a golf ball so accurately and purely that it seemed almost unbelievable. The way he sat was very awkward. His legs were too far apart, his palm grip was poor and his head was at least one foot in front of the ball. It was all contrary to golf rules, but he did the impossible.
He did not practice, or even warm up. The only thing he did was to put the ball on the green, line up and hit the golf. It was almost as if he were a machine that performed the exact same thing over and over again at an unbelievable pace.
Moe Norman was who?
Moe Norman, a Canadian born Moe Norman in Kitchener in 1929, died in September 2004 from heart failure. Numerous of the top golfers worldwide lauded him as being the best golfer they had ever seen. Inducted in the Canadian Golf Hall of Fame 1995, and Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame 2006.
Moe did not receive recognition and accolades for the achievements of his first career due to his shyness. Moe would spend his nights in car and sand traps to survive. He was known for his social awkwardness, and poor dress choices. Despite all of his amazing performances, jokes were often made about him.
He was more dressed like a construction worker or farmer than the sophisticated attire worn by golfers. His strange fashion was what made him stand out.”The Norman Swing”That made all his critics stop and pay attention. One time he once stated “I haven’t missed a fairway in 11 years”And it was. He was the owner of his swing, and could say it. “I did it my way”!
Others have done it. “their way”With his bullfrog cheeks, bent horn, and bullfrog cheeks, Dizzy Gillespie and Errol Garner are two examples of their greatness. It is impossible to match their greatness.
It cannot be denied, and Moe Norman can’t either!
Moe Norman could be described as unusual, odd even. However, it is impossible to deny the extent of his achievements and his talents.
The world’s greatest golf ball striker deserves my thanks. His game was unique.
