Mt Pleasant: High Life in Low Country

Charleston Harbor, Shem Creek, and Cove Inlet are all located just east of Charleston. This beautiful area is home to beautiful land. English settlers named this area Mt. Pleasant. Pleasant.

Visitors can feel the beauty and natural charm of Old Town as they walk along the Shem Creek docks. You can see the marsh stretching out from Shem Creek and opening up to Charleston harbor in glistening gold and green. Old Town is lined by Pitt Street. Large live oaks stretch their moss-laden trunks across narrow streets.

The charm of historic architecture hides the struggle between modern-day developers and the descendants from early settlers. The area is valued by the local population, who want it to be preserved and protected. Developers are eager to exploit the beauty of the locale. It is a long-standing struggle against progress, with roots that run deep to the coastlines. Low Country citizens have a proud history of fighting for the truth and keeping their traditions. A compromise must be reached to preserve life and industry.

“The Creek”Locals call it “Flint”, and it runs through the marsh into Charleston Harbor. It invites visitors to enjoy the natural beauty of Charleston Harbor’s architectural treasures. The creek is home to dolphins, while pelicans, gulls, and other wildlife moor on shrimp boats. This invites visitors to take a moment and admire the scenery. The sun sinks, and the golden rays from the thunderheads above reflect off the surface of water, creating a silvery glow that illuminates the marsh grass.

All sizes and shapes of boats line the docks along the creek. For more than thirty years this community provided a large portion of Charleston’s shrimp. With the Blessing of the Fleet celebration at Alahambra Hall, the shrimp season begins in April. Here are also deep sea fishing charter vessels and kayak outfitters. The dock is open to power and sail boats. Their passengers are invited to enjoy the view from the quay. It is easy to stop here and enjoy freshly caught seafood from local restaurants. “the Creek”

For longer term stays, dock your vessel at Patriot’s Point Marina. Patriot’s Point marina is just outside Shem Creek’s mouth. There are 459 slips. Beautiful view of U.S.S.A. Yorktown is a great place to learn about naval history and explore it. You could spend an entire day exploring Yorktown, Coast Guard Cutter, and Medal of Honor Museum. Every day, tour boats to Ft. Sumpter depart from Yorktown.

Patriot’s Point Resort is located nearby. The resort features nautical-themed guest rooms with bright yellows or blues. They also have comfortable bedding and stunning views over the harbour. There is an 18-hole championship course that overlooks Charleston Harbor, Fort Sumter, and Shem Creek. This course is known for challenging shoreline finishing holes and it’s located only minutes away from the Isle of Palms Beaches and Sullivan’s Island.

Patriots Point Resort knows a lot about water enthusiasts. Charleston Race Week, which is held in spring, as well as sport fishing tournaments throughout the season. Reel Bar walls are lined with Black-and-White photographs of past winners. You can get to Shem Creek by taking a shuttle or bike from East Cooper Shuttle. Local fishermen have the experience and abundance to provide fresh seafood at their best. Mt. Pleasant Seafood runs a small retail shop at the Creek. They also have a booth at Mt. Pleasant Farmer’s Market. Patrons can fin out at Water’s Edge Cabana Bar, where they enjoy the amusing antics by the Creek’s goodwill ambassadors. The male dolphin, along with the rest of his pod, makes an appearance every day at 4 p.m. The baby is swimming with his mother if you look closely. This is almost as if the creatures are just here to greet visitors to their area. You can’t help but be amazed at the beauty of these fisherman as they catch their dinner. They dive from charter boats to find fish remains, in collaboration with seagulls and brown pelicans.

Sunsets here are something to be proud of. Many restaurants have creekside and outdoor dining options, so guests can enjoy the beauty of Charleston’s sunsets with all the charm that comes from a small fishing community. Vickery’s has an outdoor bar with a dining area. The sun’s rays gather over the marsh and spread toward the mouth. The gentle breezes of Charleston Harbor ruffle through the palmettos. Even in a severe storm, you can enjoy the spectacular views from the indoor bar. The indoor bar allows one to see shrimp boats with wings that spread as far out as possible, almost like they are water angels.

You can see all the architectural details along the docks from across the creek. After 30 years, Magwoods Seafood continues to provide shrimp and fish throughout Charleston. “Live long, Love long, Eat Seafood”Their motto is painted in blue and red on the walls. The Wreck offers Low Country food favorites, served casually on enormous paper plates. You will be rewarded with a stunning sunset view from your porch or patio dining room. This is the one spot that no-see-ums cannot reach at dinner.

R.B.Red’s Ice House and’s offer outdoor dining options that are more diverse than’s. RB’s has a more upscale atmosphere and is very serious about parking. They sometimes even tow customers they don’t know. A bright yellow sign warns of possible fines for booting or towing. RB’s Shem Creek Towing Company is owned by RB’s and a tow truck can be seen on the lot.

Red’s is a casual hangout that offers Happy Hour every day. The restaurant offers free parking on the large, gravelly lot next to it. They are focused more on having fun and making people happy. Red’s also serves as the local. “Yappy Hour”This is a hotspot so make sure to bring your dogs along! The four-legged furry community loves doggie biscuits, and cold buckets full of water. The sunset view from upstairs is spectacular. The upstairs bar can be reserved by private parties with cushions. You can view the fireworks shots from the U.S.S. here on holidays. Yorktown.

Red’s Ice House has happy hours. Red’s Ice House hosts local musicians who play downstairs on Sundays. You can enjoy freshly steam shrimp at the bar on Thursdays. A sunset cruise aboard the Palmetto Breeze (a 50 foot sailing catamaran) is offered Wednesday evenings. It’s a wonderful way to see the CORA (Charleston Ocean Racing Assoc.). The harbor is home to many races, as well as plenty of opportunities for photo ops. Tickets include adult beverages, as well as an assortment of hors-du-vours. Captain Ping is always happy and ready to get guests out on the waters. If you are patient, Captain Ping will let you drive the boat if requested.

Red’s can be found just blocks away in the Old Town of Mount Pleasant. Old Town has been listed on the National Register of Historic places. Old Town houses charming churches, colonial, and antebellum properties, as well the magnificent Alhambra Hall. Alhambra Hall was once the home of Mount Pleasant Ferry Company. Alhambra Hall, built by Charles Jugnot & Oliver Hilliard in 1847 for use as a dance and summer retreat, is nestled among a large number of live oaks. This popular location is ideal for hosting community events. This peaceful spot is perfect for a relaxing afternoon picnic. It’s located on the waterfront, surrounded by live oaks and has a wonderful community playground. On your way back, take a look at Pitt Street and the little Post Office building. There are many streets that end in Charleston harbor. It is easy to understand why its founders called it Mt. Pleasant. It is a beautiful place, even though there are no mountains.

You can find the Old Town just a few blocks away. There, you will be able to indulge in old-fashioned Pitt Street Pharmacy Ice Cream sodas. In the same building which was once a grocery shop, you’ll find the Old Post House Restaurant and Tavern. The Post House was built in 1888 by German immigrants. It serves light lunches and dinners downstairs, and upstairs, as well as private events. She Crab soup, tuna, lamb shank, steaks, sauteed sea bass, and shrimp & grits await hungry diners here. Charleston can be found in Old Town.

The Farmer’s Market is open Tuesday through Friday at Old Moultrie Middle School. This tiny market has a lot of fresh produce and local products. Shoppers can enjoy local Bluegrass music or an acoustic performance while they shop. For children of all ages, snow cones and face painting can be purchased. A barbeque stand is available to ensure that your home stays full until you return. This Market is open through October. On December 8, there will be a Holiday Market and Craft Show.

You can shop in the area for a range of wonderful wares in Old Town as well as on the Creek. Some even have a bit of local history. Utonga Gallery is a village gallery that features unique Shona (Zimbabwe-inspired) sculpture. Out of Hand Gallery, located next door, is an eye-opener that offers cards, gifts, and treasures sure to make you smile. The Charleston Candle Cottage is located at West Coleman Blvd. Customers have the opportunity to chat with Rachel the proprietor. There is a postal office in the back that allows you to send art cards home. You will find a wide selection of candles here. A variety of shops can be found in the Commons, just across the street on Mill Street. Visit The Scratch Pad for the best stationery, post cards and stationary. Sue Tanis has a great selection of fun, quirky and locally-oriented stationery, gifts, and invitations to suit any occasion. Lou Edens, a local historian and proprietress, offers an assortment of gifts and home furniture. She also has a wealth of information about the local area, including local history at the Fifth Season. Lou owned and operated the Maritime Museum next door for years, and also owns Rice Hope Plantation Bed & Breakfast on the Cooper River.

Shem creek Marina is located across from The Fifth Season at Mill Street. The marina is a long-term dry dock facility for small powerboats. Sailing boats cannot navigate under this bridge. Next door is the old Maritime Museum, which has been converted into a home for Coastal Expeditions kayak tours. Coastal Expeditions is available year-round for kayak trips in Shem Creek or passenger ferry tours to Bull Island.

You will find two additional restaurants along the Shem Creek side. Shem Creek Bar & Grill has a spectacular view of the marsh from the outdoor dock bar and the indoor back porch. Uniquely, inside the restaurant’s main restaurant, is the bar with a bow shape. This reminds all that boating is their first love. The family friendly restaurant serves a variety of Low Country dishes and great seafood. Next door the new Creekside Bar & Grill offers lower priced favorites and outdoor roof seating overlooking the creek.

It is possible to spend several weeks discovering all the history of this area. Visitors to Charleston will love to watch the sunset from the deck of shrimp boats wings and to stroll along the docks to see the local shops.
