Creative innovators constantly introduce new surfboard designs and types, but these innovations rarely catch on. In general, surfers do not enjoy change. The majority of surfers are followers of top professionals and attempt to surf their boards. However, this is rarely the case. The new type of surfboard is sometimes considered to be a bit different. “not cool”. The question that surfers ask is “Who’s it surfing?”
The shapes of surfboards’ tails, noses and bottoms make up the majority of new designs and types. The surfboard tail shapes are: the swallow, pointed, thumb, bat and crescent. Do these new shapes really exist? They were once original but they are no longer.
Many of the “new”Pros surfboards designed for the competition are specifically made to suit their needs and the wave conditions they’ll be riding. These surfboards have high performance and are designed to be used by the top surfer in the world. They are impossible to surf for regular surfers. This would be similar to a golfer trying hit a ball with Tiger Woods’ driver. It is very challenging and likely impossible.
But there are some great new surfboard designs. Tom Morey is a pioneer in the surf industry and the inventor of The Morey Boogie. Morey introduced numerous innovations. “new”Surfboard designs, types and innovations. His reputation as an innovator in surfboard design has been well-known. He is known for his fin boxes and anti-slip products such as Slipcheck, El Gripo and the WaterSkate. “the ONE!”He has a combination finless skimboard, bodyboard surfboard, and a shortboard called The Heater. You can find many other options, but I’ll limit my attention to these.
Many of Morey’s designs for surfboards are his attempt to improve on existing designs. Morey claims, “I never set out to ‘invent’ something. Instead, I simply keep my eyes and ears open and ever motivated to ‘get it right’, apply what material, design or process I find might work better.”George Greenough’s 1972 WaterSkate was an extension of his concave deck kneeboard. Tom took George’s idea and made a stand-up skate. He increased the thickness to equalize volume. “wave-face bounce response time.”Because of the concave deck, riders’ feet were better placed. The new WATERSKATE surfboard design was hugely popular. The board worked flawlessly!
The 2013 model is what? He has recently improved the 1972 WaterSkate version by changing the rear rails. Also, Heater Rails have been modified with their proven speed enhancement and turning capability. This is a reverse to the rails that he used on the Morey Boogie Board. Available in sizes 5’6″ to 6’6″, the board 2013 is available in a variety of sizes.” to 7′ 0″.
Morey invented the Swizzle, a new longboard that he called the Swizzle in early 1990s. These boards are still being made by Morey, and come in lengths ranging from 7′ 0 to 9′.” to 10′ 0″And it’s longer. This custom fiberglass-glassed surfboard features an unusual shape. The nose is the Peck Penetrator’s, and the body has wider chest and hip area. The center of the board is just outside of parallel. Morey describes the shape as “parabolic”. Rear rails have Afterburner vacuum rails at a 45-degree inward angle, similar to a boogieboard rail. By reducing the pressure on the back of the board, the Afterburners increase speed and reduce the drag of the wave. Vacuum rear rails are designed to engage water, helping pull the board around as it turns.
Morey also has a mini-short, innovative surfboard design that he calls “Morey’s”. “the ONE!”. The board can be used as a surfboard, skimboard or boogieboard. It measures just 4′ 6″, has a minimal nose rocker and Afterburner rearrails. The board also features a squash tail, pointed nose, and squash tail. The board can be used for beach fun but the best surfers will take it to bigger waves. One exception is the ONE. The board has no fins so that the rider can spin on the waves. It is very fast because it has no drag fins. The board’s soft-friendly materials are another great advantage. It has a smooth bottom with foam boogie boards and decks that have soft foam rails. For riding, the deck can either be waxed or traction pad added. The board is loved by surfers.
Morey has created a new type of surfboard, the Heater. Because of its rear rails, which are the reverse of Afterburner’s rear rail, the Heater gets its name. This rail features a 45 degree angle from the bottom and has a hard edge. It reduces drag and sucction in the water flow over the rear 1/3. The rail also provides the board with a lot of bite from the hard bottom edge during a turn. Additionally, the board has more foam at the front 1/3 which gives it more buoyancy and allows it to get into waves earlier. The additional foam also allows the surfer the ability to create sections on the board that would not be possible with a smaller, thinner surfboard. Because of the reduced drag and suction, the Heater is extremely quick, making it easier to catch waves and giving the surfer an enjoyable feeling of success. The Heater is a great choice for all levels of surfer.
I’ll be writing about new types and designs of surfboards in future articles. Stay in the water, Surf Life!
