Many of the grand European cities have pet-friendly policies. The following are top ten cities and countries.
Belgium, France and ItalyThese are the four most friendly countries for pets that we’ve visited. You can freely travel in Europe with your pet because there are no border crossings. There are no significant distances between cities or between countries. It is simple to get around as most European trains, busses and ferry operators allow pets aboard.
PARISIt is the best city for pets we’ve ever visited. Paris has thousands upon thousands of street cafes where you can eat with your pet. In this “city of lights”, well-behaved pets are allowed to dine in restaurants with their owners.
A Sunday morning will bring you well-dressed women and men out with well-behaved pets, who are walking along a leash and heading for the nearest park.
Montmartre District has many artists who have set up on sidewalks. An artist can create a painting from your pet for a mere few Francs.
Immigration into France:Three things are required to bring your pet from America, Canada or Mexico into France. You must microchip your pet with an ISO 15-digit microchip. Your pet also needs to be vaccinated against rabies and be issued with the EU form for France’s veterinary certificate. You will be simply passed by the immigration officer.
LAKE LUCERNESwitzerland is known for the beauty of its ski slopes and its quality. You and your pet will enjoy a wonderful ski vacation if you rent a chalet near the lifts. There is a cafe on the sidewalk that allows pets to be placed under every table. A thicker coat is not necessary for your pet. You can purchase a coat that will keep it warm.
You must visit Zurich, Switzerland’s banking capital. Zurich is not only famous for its banks, but also because it’s home to numerous famous chocolatiers and watchmakers.
Switzerland is one such country, where pets are an everyday part of every day life. Because of its central location, it’s easy to drive to France or Italy in either a car rental or train.

BRUSSELSThis is another top-ten destination. Your pet will not be allowed in museums but it is welcome everywhere. It is an easy city to walk around, so even if you stay for only a month, you will never be bored of places you can visit together. It is home to many beautiful parks. Take a tour of the antique flea market or take a look at Belgium’s past at Cinquantenaire Park.
Segways are fun! The Segway looks like a large skateboard with an electric motor and handle. These little gadgets are a common sight in Brussels. They can be used to move around at speeds that your dog will enjoy.
Brussels is known for its nightlife, but pets aren’t allowed into the clubs.

MADRIDThis is Europe’s oldest city and deserves to be included in our Top ten Pet Friendly Places To Visit. It is home to many fountains and statues. Spaniards love to pet their dogs, so they’ll love you too.
Go with your pet for a stroll to Plaza Mayor. “aristocratic centre”Madrid is home to Madrid’s stunning Royal Palace. This 17th-century monument combines Classical and Baroque styles. The Plaza de Oriente, the Opera House, and the Almudena Cathedral are all located next to the Palace. Consecrated by Pope John Paul II in 1993.
You can also visit Spain’s Costa del Sol, which has beautiful white beaches that extend as far as the eyes can see. You can bring your dog along to most beaches.
Three things are required to import your pet from America, Canada, Mexico or Mexico into Spain. You must micro-chip your pet with an ISO 15 digit chip, vaccinate for Rabies, and provide the EU form for Spain’s veterinary certificate. You will be simply passed by the immigration officer.
Because it’s so common to bring your pet on vacation, hotels in Europe will be more inclined to welcome him or her. If you’re staying longer than one week, you might be able to book a beautiful apartment or house.
PLAYA DEL CARRMENMexico offers a wonderful destination for lovers of white sand and brilliant blue water.
Ruggles was a Shih Tzu who lived in the house with me. Ruggles could lie down in the shade while I exercised at an outdoor gym. There were many small restaurants on the beach where Ruggles would have lunch with me.
We took at least once the inter-city bus deluxe from Playa Del Carmen, to Cancun. Ruggles was next to me. It was not legal, but nobody said anything.
The Mayan Temples in Chichen-Itza are located nearby. My understanding is that animals are not permitted on these grounds.
There are many caves that have underground water pools within a radius of two to three kilometers. These caves were home to several pet animals, which I witnessed during my visit.
COSTA RICAThis is where pet owners travel frequently. It is easy to go through customs together with your pet. San Jose has exciting nightlife and gambling. You will find plenty of hotels that are pet-friendly in this city.
Costa Rica attracts many tourists from around the world who want to visit rural areas with tall trees and beautiful waterfalls. The rain forest is where brilliant blue butterflies can be found flittering about in the lush foliage. These areas offer less luxurious accommodation, but many people will be happy to welcome you and your pet.
Immigration:
You will require a certificate of good physical health to allow your pet into Costa Rica. All dogs must have rabies vaccinations.
We also travel to the United States, rounding off our list of top ten pet-friendly destinations. With a valid health certificate, your pet can be brought into the USA.
KEY WESTThis is the US’s most dog-friendly city. The small community can be described as “laid back”The place where the pace of life is slow. You can bring your pet to almost every motel, bed and breakfast or hotel in the city. Each restaurant offers an outdoor area for your pet to enjoy, and many restaurants also allow pets with good behavior inside.
Ruggles, Ruggles, and I went for a short walk in the area a while back years ago. I stopped at an exquisite restaurant to take a look. The maitre de came to my aid as I was looking at the menu. Ruggles were welcome, I inquired. His response was that he prefers chicken or beef.
THE BIG APPLE – NEW YORKThis deserves to be on the list. Everybody in this busy city owns a pet. The pet walkers may have as many as six to eight pets at once. Doggie heaven is Sunday at Central park. You can meet and greet over 100 other dogs during the walk. You can then stop by one of the cafes outside. “coffee and a roll”.
It is the ideal city to find an elegant hotel. Pets are more than welcome in elegant hotels. You will be more than welcome to your pet if you pay more for the room. You can find many different places your pet is welcome in. Pet Travel offers a list of over 100 pet-friendly hotels.
Ruggles and me stayed in one of the more luxurious hotels near Central Park a few years back. Ruggles and I went to the bar late in the afternoon for a drink. The manager walked in as we were already sitting at the bar. Ruggles was given a pat by the manager and he said “I would much rather have a well behaved pet in my hotel than a small child who is not well behaved. “As many hotels did, the bellman came to my bed each morning and took Ruggles on a short walk.

ASHEVILLE North CarolinaWell deserves to be on this list. Asheville is a city that allows pets in more than half of its accommodations. This proves it to be one of America’s best pet-friendly cities. This is the best choice for pet owners who love to golf.
Asheville has many outdoor festivals, street fairs, concerts and other events during the summer, where your dog will be most welcome.
SAN DIEGOOur border is just a short drive away. The metropolitan city of the ocean is home to not just one, but two. “doggie beaches”. You will find hundreds of dog-friendly accommodation in and around the city. We stayed at Sophia Hotel, which was pet friendly when we visited Bear our Shih Tzu. Bear enjoyed being pampered by the friendly young lady at the front desk who was willing to help him.
We walked each day to one outdoor café for lunch or dinner. Bear was almost always offered water.
BEING A COURTEOUS TRAVELING PET OWNER
Due to their appreciation of the business’s value, there are more options and accommodations for the pet owner who is traveling. It is your responsibility as a pet owner to behave politely and show compassion. Do not allow your pet to bark, or let it run wild. Rule number 1: Make sure you pick up after your pet.
You will have a wonderful vacation if you visit these pet-friendly places. Book your flights in advance if you travel by air. Many airlines limit the amount of pets allowed per flight.
