In golf swing theory, there are two main strands. The first is to swing the clubhead. Another is to swing the handle. You want to swing the entire club and not just one part. That will eliminate flaws in your swing and allow you to hit better shots with less time.
Do you remember how to chop wood? Your axe swing is exactly like your golf club swing. The whole axe is yours. The handle and head of your axe are always moving in the same direction. Although it may sound obvious, it is actually more subtle than that.
With one hand on the shaft, hold a golf ball in your hands. Move your right hand so that the club hangs vertically. You will see the clubhead and grip end moving in the same direction. This is the way the axe moves when it is pressed down on wood. This is how you achieve maximum power.
Keep the club horizontally at your feet. Push the grip sideways and use your right hand as a pivot to allow the clubhead to react. Both ends are now moving in opposing directions. This way of swinging the club would cause you to lose power and make the wood fall. The head would be flailing about instead of following a straight path.
What can you do to incorporate this idea in your golf swing? To prevent the club from pivoting, swing the club back. That can be done by deliberately breaking your wrists. Let your wrists break naturally by taking the club as one unit. It’s not too late.
Do the reverse on the downswing. As a whole, swing the club downwards and keep your wrist broken until you feel the momentum. Casting is when your wrist break does not release properly. This refers to the opposite ends of the club, which can be described as casting.
This is how you can see the real deal. Hold the club in your right hand or left hand for left-handed golfers. Slowly swing your club so that both ends are moving in the same direction. Swing the club gently back down and watch the whole club work together. You can’t pivot around the clubhead as it comes in to the ball. Instead, you must control the handle so that the clubhead moves forward.
Slow practice swings will help you to master this concept. This movement will help you strike better balls when your swing is normal.
