Your mental game is key to success on the course. Many times it has been stated that golf is a mental game. This is so true.
What is the mental game? Let’s look into this further.
It is possible to be mentally ready in many ways.
ATTITUDE
First and foremost, you are your attitude. In other words: The mental game begins with “you”. Your game will be severely affected if you are a’stinkin’ thinkin’ person. You will be able to think positive thoughts and make good mental images, and you’ll play well.
CONFIDENCE
Also, your attitude can affect how confident you are. You will most likely hit a fantastic golf shot if you’re mentally ready, confident and at ease when you get to the tee. This is not a guarantee, but it’s a fact.
VISUALIZATION
Visualization allows you to see the shot before it happens. The best way to have a winning game is to see it first in your mind and then visualize it. However, it doesn’t often happen that way in reality.
Jack Nicklaus shares his thoughts on visualization.
“I never hit a shot, not even in practice, without having a very sharp, in-focus picture of it in my head. First I see the ball where I want it to finish, nice and white and sitting up high on the bright green grass. Then the scene quickly changes, and I see the ball going there: its path, trajectory, and shape, even its behavior on landing. Then there is a sort of fade-out, and the next scene shows me making the kind of swing that will turn the previous images into reality.”
Do not fail to play to win!
Your game will succeed more if positive thoughts are invoked than negative ones. Positive thoughts will often produce a better result than what you had hoped.
GOALS
Prior to starting the round, establish a goal. Set a realistic goal and visualize your round. You can set your mental goal to shoot in the 80s if you are used to shooting in the 90s. This would require you to mentally break down the steps needed to achieve your goal. For example, imagine shooting 44 points on the front and 44 back. Then execute your goal. Your goal will get you into the 80s.
Keep your eyes on the shot. Keep your eyes on the ball. It can lead to disaster if you lose your focus while playing golf. That can mean the difference between shooting in the 80’s and the 90’s.
STATEGY
Each hole should be considered when you plan your strategy. You will need to plan your strategy for each hole. For example, if you are playing a 445 yard par 4, and know that you drive approximately 245 yards, you’ll have 200 yards. Is there a club that you are confident can handle 200 yards? You can use your second shot to find a range from 50 to 100 yards to the green. Your third shot will allow you to reach the green close enough to the hole so that your par putt is possible.
Manage your course smartly. Plan ahead how you’ll tackle the hole.
A strategy can mean the difference between scoring a high score and scoring poorly. You must play smart to improve your odds of winning. Think!
A good round can be made if you are mentally ready and awake. Mental preparation can help you play a better round.
