The Secret to the Golf Swing is the ability to take the energy from the brain, where it is in an electrical form, and use this energy to stimulate the muscles in a precise manner to control the movements of the skeleton as a lever assembly. The lever assembly turns a triangular shape with collapseable sides. It is controlled by shoulders, arms, and shoulders. One side can collapse, while the other side is straight. Thus the shape and integrity of the triangle are maintained by the elbows.
The golf club’s pendulum is attached to the triangle (the point where the hands are gripping it). It can swing freely, but must be controlled. Rotating the triangle around an exact fixed point in space, it creates a perfect circle. By controlling the location of this point, called “The Swing Circle Center”, the player creates an arc that consistently returns to the ball with great accuracy.
As the triangle rotates, the rotational force is transferred from the ground to its center by the spine. The spine moves laterally at each lower end. For a strike to be delivered accurately, the lower spine must move laterally.
This powerful reverse of triangle rotation can also be achieved by the lateral movement from the lower part of your spine. When done correctly, the movement guides the point of triangle (the fingers) to rotate down to the ball along the correct path. It simplifies controlling the trajectory of the club head.
As the spine is formed by the movements of the knees, hips and feet, the leg movement allows the hips to tilt and support the body. The hips are able to turn in a tilt, so the chest also turns and tilts with them. So the triangle can be controlled perfectly by the hips, feet and knees in order to determine the direction of the return orbit.
You can feel the arms setting and controlling the club just as well as the body doing the back swing. As the body rotates at a speed that is almost as fast, the arms can feel like they are doing virtually nothing. The hips, feet, knees, and hips control their movements. The arms seem very active to an observer, but to the player they feel like they’re just a few ropes. The club head can reach incredible speed when the grip on it is correct and the hands hold the club gently.
This is the key. The back swing pivot is key. Learn how to properly set your arms and the proper levers. Now relax your arms and allow the club to swing naturally from the wrists. You have now learned the Down, Under and up release.
