A patron saint medal is a popular item to have on your neck or carry around with you at all times. The saint can be seen as a protector, helper, or comforter. Many people wear medals honoring patron saints simply because they are named after certain saints. No matter the reason, these medals have become increasingly popular and are used by many people worldwide.
5.) Saint Patrick – Saint Patrick is Ireland’s patron saint. It is celebrated every March 17th, which happens to be his feast day. This holiday is well-known among those of Irish heritage and others. Patrick’s tale is quite interesting. He was only fourteen when Druids captured him and took him from Britain to Ireland. Patrick spent his entire time in prison praying, and was even forced to labor in Ireland. When God instructed him to leave Ireland, he became extremely close to God. There he met sailors who brought him back to Britain. Patrick was also ordained a Bishop and became a priest in his home country. To rid Ireland of Druids and pagans, he returned to Ireland. Patrick set out to make it his mission to bring as many Irishmen as possible into the Christian faith. He had much success in doing so. The shamrock symbolises Saint Patrick. He used it to show the Irish the Holy Trinity. Every leaf on the Shamrock represented one of three things: God, Jesus or Holy Spirit.
4.) Saint Thomas Aquinas: Saint Thomas Aquinas was the patron saint of students and universities because of his love of education. His feast day falls each January 28th. In his youth, Saint Thomas was placed under the supervision of the Benedictines at Monte Casino. As a child, Thomas learned quicker than any other boy and displayed the patience of an adult. Thomas joined the Order of Saint Dominic when he was able to make his own decisions in life. Thomas was not supported by his family, which hurt him deeply. But he felt that he had made the right decision. Saint Thomas, who studied under Saint Albert, was among the greatest students Albert had ever seen. One of the greatest theologians in the Catholic Church’s history is Saint Thomas.
3.) Saint John The Baptist – Saint John was martyred just like Jesus. His followers heard his story about Jesus Christ and the fact that he is truly the son of God. John was born to Zachary, Elizabeth and was even conceived while Elizabeth was still quite young. God sent Gabriel the angel to tell Zachary that Elizabeth would be pregnant. This was despite all odds. John is most well-known for his baptism of men and women at the Jordan River. Most notably, Jesus was baptized in this way by Saint John. John had a deep understanding of Jesus’ identity and was humbled that Jesus came to him to be Baptized. Herod at the time was ruler and didn’t like the amount of power Saint John was able to exert over large groups of people. For false allegations, he had Herod arrest him and have him beheaded. For his faith in Jesus and Christianity, he was tortured. Saint John the Baptist was the last prophet of the Old Testament, and the last prophet to Jesus Christ.
2.) Saint Michael – Saint Michael is the Patron Saint of Police Officers and his Feast Day falls on September 29th every year. His name almost always appears in the next sentence. “the archangel”He is that. His role as the principal archangel was to fight Satan and his followers in Heaven. His reputation as the protector of the Catholic Church for all time is legendary, which is why he’s the patron saint of police officers. Because of his brave actions in fighting Satan, the Greeks held Michael higher than all the other archangels.
1.) Saint Christopher-Saint Christopher, like Saint John The Baptist, died as a martyr. He refused to participate in a sacrifice made by pagan gods in his 3rd Century death. The story of Saint Christopher’s quest to please God is one legend. He asked a local monk what he could do. He was told by the hermit to pray and fast, but Saint Christopher refused to do so. After he had prayed, the hermit told him that he would help others cross nearby rivers because so many people have lost their lives trying. The hermit found a small boy in need of help, and he placed him on his shoulder. Christopher could not believe the weight of this boy and how fast it moved in water. As he was tired and exhausted, he turned to Christopher and explained that he felt the full weight of all the earth upon his shoulders. His work was highly appreciated, and he quickly vanished. Because Saint Christopher features on many medals, he’s the patron saint most people want to see. His medals include those of basketball, hockey, tennis, gymnastics cheerleading, figure skating and volleyball players.
