The Vibram company has been in business since 1937, they have been making the most well known and most popular boot soles for many of the best shoe manufacturers. You have probably owned boots made with Vibram soles if you are a fan of performance boots. FiveFinger is also the manufacturer of minimalist running shoes, the FiveFinger.
Vibram started making disc golf balls a few years ago. The composition of Vibram discs is rubber-based, which makes them stand out from other disc golf discs made from various types of plastic. Rubber-based compounds have the advantage of a more grippy feel, so discs don’t slip from your hands. They also resist the high speed flying and impact golf discs can take.
A third Vibram disc was added to my collection recently. An Obex midrange, Summit putter and Trak fairway drivers are all in my bag. Vibram claims that the Obex is a stable midrange, that enjoys a headwind and can glide very well. Marshal Street’s disc speed rating is 5. The Obex has the same disc speed rating as Marshal Street’s Discraft Wasp and Innova Gator but is a bit more stable.
Let me tell you a bit more about myself and the discs that I carry. One lightning disc, three Vibrams and twelve Discraft are all in my bag. A Buzzz is what I use on every midrange shot that I take. It always gets where it needs to, except when it’s windy. In the wind, it’s just not a good choice for the Buzzz. It was the midrange that I needed to handle wind. The Wasp was the one I chose, however it didn’t perform well enough for me.
When I pulled the Obex from the mailbox, it was ready to go. The wind was blowing at 30 to 35 MPH the following day. It was exciting to try the Obex in wind. After a few throws in the park, it flew flat and straight. With anhyzer becoming the wind, I was able to throw 5 throws at once. The anhyzer stayed online and turned into the wind every time it was used.
This impressed me. The disc performed well in both a headwind as well as a tailwind. The disc did well with the wind and went where I needed it to. I then tried a few forehand shots. My Obex is now my go-to tool.
One thing I cannot say is that the rubber compound makes the disc soften and become bendy when it’s exposed to the sun. The disc felt different, but it did not seem to have any effect on its performance. The disc is rarely left out in direct sunlight, which makes it not an issue.
No matter if your preference is Innova or Discraft, Vibram disc golf equipment will work for you. If you decide to give Vibram a try, you will not be disappointed. Vibram discs come in a wide range at the top disc dealer in Minnesota.
