These are all found in abundance in the forests. The mind is full of old age stereotypes in every shape and size. They have an adverse effect on how we age. They have affected my life since I was in my 70s. I was able to overcome many of them. You too can!
We are talking about what? These are just a few examples. I often hear people say, “Oops, I’m having a senior moment”This is another way to put it: Because I age, I automatically forget about things. The person saying it is usually under 50. But the lure is there, and it has been swallowed. When you grow old, you lose all your memories, for good. It is a grossly inaccurate statement.
Another version I hear is that seniors on the course are a lot more fun. If someone drives short and hits concrete pavement, then they receive a huge rebound of 20-30 yards. This is known as “against the odds”. “senior bounce.”Look at all the cards and birthday wishes with jokes about growing old and being limited in what you can do. It’s hard to forget the influence of elderspeak upon us by younger generations. The condescending, sweetie pie voice.
If you’re a part of an older generation, what is the risk? People accept the stereotypes of aging without even realizing that they are affecting their lives. They become less active, have a narrower outlook, experience less fulfillment in life and suffer from negative effects on their health. What can you do to avoid the confirmation that aging is a rapid decline and loss in intelligence?
1. Research is conclusive. The aging process is affected by what you think. Every thought that you think has a physical impact on the cells. If you focus your negative thoughts on fear or anger, you will see the physical effects it has. Positive attitudes about aging may affect your quality of life and memory as well as the way that you age.
2. Stop thinking about yourself as old. Focus on the positive and give back to your family, community, and friends. For dealing with daily life, love is your best coping tool. Let the people you care about know that you are there for them. It will be difficult for you to age well if you are part of a supportive community. You aren’t old if you don’t have fun.
3. For maintaining your health, you can use any type of energy. The research supports this. An analysis of 302 adults aged between 70 and 82 was published in the Journal of the American medical Association. The results showed that even moderate physical activity could prolong your life. Regular movement is key. You should first check with your doctor to determine if there are any restrictions. You can then incorporate this activity into your daily life.
4. Every other day, lift light weights. We lose muscle mass as we age. This natural decline can be countered by light weight training. Begin with 2-5 pounds and eight repetitions each for the arms, and 12 repetitions for your legs. Gradually you will reach 20-25 for your arms, and 40 for your legs.
5. Keep learning. “Anyone who stops learning is old,”Henry Ford “whether at twenty or eighty. Anyone who keeps learning stays young.”Your health and ability to think clearly can be improved by learning about nutrition, exercise, social relationships, and successful aging. The quality of your life is directly affected by the choices you make. Or you can choose tranquility and peace of mind each day, or let yourself drift into conflict about everything that isn’t right with.
6. It is important to remember that happiness and long-term success are dependent on interpersonal relationships. Your stress levels will be reduced if you are surrounded by people who you care about and can laugh with. Do not be afraid to keep in touch and make new friends no matter your age. Your diet is just as important as social connections.
7. Do not let a single mistake make you a loser. Buckminster Fuller once said: “The only reason I know so much is because of all the failures I’ve had.”Reduce the number of negative emotions like anger, worry and guilt that live inside your head. This will improve your immunity system, increase longevity, and help you to be more positive. You will learn how to do this from the support of many studies.
You can strengthen your beliefs by getting in touch and strengthening your faith in an entity greater than you. They will provide the guidance and direction that you need to use your mind for greater good. Give yourself permission to doubt and learn what you are able and unable to control.
You decide how old you are. George Vaillant (Professor of Psychiatry, Harvard University) and co-author, Successful Aging put it this manner “An active and happy old age, dear Brutus, may not lie so much in our stars and genes as in ourselves.”His research on the reasons why certain people have fewer health problems as others is a major one. Be proactive and don’t let stereotypes stop you from being active as you age.
