Recently, my daughter and her friend took me to the Valley of the Waves resort at Sun City in the North West of South Africa.
Sun City can be found approximately 230km from Johannesburg. It is a huge resort with many luxury hotels, including the Lost City and the Cabanas.
There are many activities, including games drives. [at the nearby Pilanesberg Game Park and Bakubung Game Park]Gambling, bird-watching and hiking.
We decided not to waste our time trying to get everything done in the resort. We decided to relax on the beach and take part in spring break activities.
A mobile company I am following hosts an event that lasts one week. It allows families to come and play, see extreme water-sports, or just relax for one week. Day trips are also available for this event. It is live broadcast on TV and radio.
This spring break is not associated with college. It involves family fun. Toddlers, teens, and school-going children play together in a variety of groups that are constantly changing. Grandparents, siblings and others may decide to swim in the pool or play in organised games.
Although I had hoped to add an elephant ride to our program, the girls voted against me. They said I was too busy with the kids to care about the elephants. It was also something I suspected that they might be afraid of being in close contact with me. “wild animal”I was not going to insist on it. Perhaps I will do it next time.
These are just a few of the many activities that we tried:
1. Learned surfing and followed the waves. It felt odd to be standing on what is called a beach, knowing that it was miles away. However, man-made waves can also be quite high on the pond. Parents and children can both have great fun scuba diving or riding waves.
2. Rock-climbing is something you can learnIronic, given the nature of the rocks around the beach, that rock-climbing area is artificial. However, the children enjoyed the experience as though they were actually climbing real rocks.
3. I played volleyball, and did some hula hoops.– Teens from different family groups were delighted to gather the children and play games with them, or even run some contests.
4. You can relax on the lazy River The ride along the river was smooth and quiet until the stones monkeys at the river’s edge started spraying water into my face. I was trying to get away from the water, and they thought it was funny. Huh!
5. I took a water slide down a steep hill My daughter’s friend (also nine years old but shorter) cannot go on the slide. This meant that we didn’t linger too much on this activity.
6. Watched demonstrationsA formal program included demonstrations in water skiing and surfing as well as routines performed by cheerleading groups. The majority of the dancers were university students and their figure was impressive enough to make teenage boys’ hearts beat faster.
7. Do some work, read a bookReading on the water side is hard work. Especially when it is hot and the sun beating down, you are tempted to go to sleep even for ten minutes. A notebook and a pen were also handy so I was able to take some notes on the journey.
8. I took pictures of monkeys Our first day in our resort was a disaster. We lost our way to the hotel. Because the layout of the resort is so complicated, I have no idea how it happened. I should have gone to the Cascades entrance from the beach. We found ourselves in the middle of the hotel watching the monkeys play among the trees, and then we were able to get out from behind the building. Although we tried to avoid getting too close to the monkeys, we snapped as many photographs as we could without disturbing them.
