This statement “If you can do it once you can do it twice if you did it on purpose”It is used in this series of articles on social media marketing and in all marketing literature. It was a request from me to create an article that explains my thinking behind this statement. This article was not something I thought of writing. It is something I said as a coach for years and I realized how fundamental it was. I consider this one of the key foundations to successful internet marketing.
Begin at the end. “…if you did it on purpose.”This means you knew what your desired outcome was and had some plan to get there. You didn’t just do it blindly. It was a matter of intention and purpose that you achieved what you wanted. This crucial point is why I put it at the conclusion of my statement. It is where people are more likely to recall it. Swinging wild can help you achieve what you want. But it’s unlikely that you can do it consistently or efficiently again. If you’ve never played any golf, you may not know what to do. However you will probably be able to see the tiny ball go into the hole. The ball is taken as a normal swing. However, any professional golfers will see the ball for what it really is: a wild shot at it. The ball flies along the fairway. The tiny hole just over the fairway is where it goes! You can do it again. Yeah. Right. This is not possible. It is almost impossible for professionals to duplicate the task. You don’t even know how it was done. You could theoretically do it again, but it was possible to do it before. This would be possible because it wouldn’t defy any laws. You can’t make it happen whenever you want, or even close to it. It is difficult to understand the steps required to reach a particular result and then be able repeat them consistently to obtain sustainable results.
You now have a strategy to implement and understand the reasons you need it to help you reach your ultimate goal. Which is most likely to make a lot more money. This discussion is a good opportunity to talk about marketing and not golf. We must now address the original statement. “If you can do it once…”. To get visitors to your website, you execute your strategy. But it doesn’t work. How do you fix it? You now know what you did wrong and can change that strategy. Only one. This is crucial. This is important. If you do not make multiple adjustments to your strategy simultaneously, you won’t be able to determine what made you successful. Now that you know what your actions are and have measured the results, you can execute this plan and continue to adjust it until you reach the execution plan that will get you your visitor. You now know how to get that one visitor. You may also have some failures in execution. You will find both of these pieces extremely useful!
Now we are at the second part of that initial statement. “…you can do it twice…”. You now have the ability to attract one visitor if your thinking processes, execution plan, and measurement methods work rationally. Also, you know how to obtain a second visitor… referred to as two. By extension, you also now know how to get your third visitor…and your fourth…and your hundredth…thousandth… You have a concrete and consciously executable strategy that will get you a visitor. By simply following your plan, you can get another visitor whenever you need one. Your business is now built on purpose.
Knowing all of the steps that lead to a visitor, you will be able to work faster, more efficiently, and get more visitors than you put in. You will eventually be able to automate and improve each step so that they are not a mystery.
You won’t ever be able to attract thousands of people if you don’t know the exact steps required. If you don’t know how you can repeat the first one, how will you get it again? What about the third? Fourth? No! Although it may seem possible to be lucky, if your internet marketing efforts are too aggressive you’ll never see the results you want.
This first statement is now broken into three pieces and each reason why it’s there has been discussed. The following paragraph serves as an outline of a mantra that you can use to help guide your actions. It is also a continuation of this article. When you are confident in your action plan, you can take it further by learning and applying the steps.
Rinse and Repeat. Rinse and Repeat. Rinse and continue…
It doesn’t matter if it isn’t possible to do it one time, you can always do it again – as long as it was done intentionally.
