Active Senior Exercise

Many people become more active with age. Our bodies are no longer able to perform the same activities as they used to. While this may sound true, it is important to keep moving as much as possible. It’s important to not only keep in shape, but also to ensure that our circulatory, respiratory and digestive systems work properly. Exercise can boost your immune system, improve balance, and keep you mentally sharp. You can slow down the aging process by exercising. These benefits don’t require that you do extreme exercise. Many activities are enjoyable and allow you to socialize with other people.

Dancing is a wonderful way to exercise. Dancing is great for keeping your muscles moving. You can choose from many different classes to learn the steps you prefer, depending on your preference in music. You will be able to improve your coordination, balance, and overall dance ability. Dance at home to your favourite music, or create your own moves.

If you aren’t let your mind get in the way, golf is another great activity. Before you begin your round, do some stretching of your back, legs and arms. You can also walk your rounds, although most courses offer golf carts. It’s good to hit the golf range with a few balls every other day.

Cycling a bicycle is great cardio and strengthens your legs. It is worth starting with short, 15- to 20-minute rides 3 times per week.

It is important to have the correct size bike for your height and it in working order. Wear a helmet whenever you go out and always have water.

You are less likely to injure yourself swimming. Swimming provides water resistance, but your muscles are not as stressed by running, walking or biking. A rehabilitation program may allow you to exercise in a swimming pool. Do not swim in or exercise alone in the pool.

Just walking is one of your best exercise options. A 1 to 2 lb. can be held. To add some extra exercise to your arms, you can hold a 1 or 2 lb. People will often meet up with friends and go for walks or socializing on a daily basis. You can take your dog for walks every day.

If you’re going to begin an exercise program, I suggest you talk to your doctor to ensure that your activities are safe. Begin slow and slowly increase the intensity and length of each session. Find something you enjoy doing and that you look forward to. You will be able to live a healthy, fit lifestyle.
