Seniors are concerned about their health and well-being, often because they have spent years ignoring these topics. What age did YOU decide that your health and fitness were not a top priority for you? It is possible to get back in shape at any age, and it is usually possible!
People over sixty are increasingly going to gyms, and regularly working out on treadmills as well as exercise equipment and free weights. Many marathons now have 60-plus athletes, while half-marathons attract even more seniors. For their pleasure and for helping seniors stay healthy, they are frequently seen on tennis courts, golf courts, or squash courts.
If your health is not good enough to take up extreme senior sports, you may be able to start more easily. For health and fitness to be fully functional, you need proper nutrition and exercise. However, seniors do not need to make drastic changes to enhance their quality of life.
How active are you? A walk around your block every day is a great way to get moving if you do most of your exercise by walking from the couch to the toilet. How long have you been riding a bicycle regularly if mobility is not an issue? Instead of focusing on mobility, think about moderate exercise. There are many bodyweight exercises you can do at your home and without having to lift weights.
You might prefer to do simple, low-impact activities like Tai Chi or yoga. You can do them all at an easy level for seniors, with the possibility to increase your ability as your body adjusts. It doesn’t matter if you are able to attend a class or not – many videos online and DVDs can be used at home. Again, you don’t need any equipment to start…
Are there any recreation facilities in your locality? There may be a swimming pool in your area. You could also exercise and have fun. Some even offer senior classes. You will soon forget about any anxiety you have when you start exercising in public. You will be more likely to stick with the program and feel proud of your accomplishments as you age by sharing your experiences with like-minded seniors.
Remember, the gym will always be open to you if you are physically fit. You can start weight lifting at home with dumbbells purchased at your local sporting store. You can also talk with the gym managers if youre feeling adventurous. Due to large numbers of baby boomers, personal trainers are becoming more adept at training seniors. Hiring a personal trainer for at least a few classes will help you to start on the right foot. Start with lighter weight workouts, and then work your way up. You’ll be asking your body to stretch and move in new ways so it is best to keep it simple.
Fitness for seniors is possible in many ways. All of these paths are easy to start and require little effort. You can take control of your health today and enjoy a healthier, happier lifestyle.
