Self-Defense Options You May Not Have Seen Before

Everyone wants to feel secure whether at home, in your car, or just out going about your business. You may need some form of self defense to defend yourself and your family. If you have spent time researching different kinds of self-defense tools and training, you will no doubt have seen many stores and websites selling everything you need. If none of these standard methods appeals to you though, here a few other suggestions (some serious, some not so serious):

  1. Instead of pepper spray, use a can of wasp and hornet spray. You can easily find it and the effectiveness is up to 20 feet. This compares with six to eight feet for many pepper spray products.
  2. Steel shot-sewn gloves. The gloves are harmless, but they work just like a Blackjack and are easily found from many different sellers via the Internet. There are also similar baseball caps with steel shot sewn in to the cap. It is not known how comfortable this would be though.
  3. To make a small flame thrower, you can use WD-40 or a butane lighter. However, collateral damage can be an issue.
  4. You can use the sharpened edge from one of your credit cards to make an effective weapon for cutting someone in close quarters.
  5. You could also use a wrist braced slingshot with a bag full of balls and bearings. While it may take some practice to master, a quality slingshot can cause serious damage when you hit the target.
  6. The advantages of a hockey stick in self-defense are numerous. The stick is a great weapon to slash at someone or something and doesn’t seem out of place when you carry it around.
  7. An excellent option for home defense is to have a couple of large dogs. A continuous loop tape, or even a cd with dogs barking works well if your dog is not large enough.
  8. Protective gloves made of Kevlar can be used to protect against knife attacks.
  9. Experts recommend that you bite – but not just a regular bite. Instead, bite more like a pitbull bite and preferably one on your ear or finger.
  10. One of the “unbreakable” umbrellas for sale on the internet offers a way to keep an attacker at a distance; and if you’ve ever seen commuters jockeying for position in the London Underground, you can appreciate the use of the umbrella as an offensive weapon.
  11. The Palm Pistol is a gun that can be used for self defense. The Palm Pistol is a 38 caliber single shot pistol that can be carried in your palm. The pistol was specifically designed to be used by seniors and disabled individuals with reduced physical dexterity. Instead of using your index finger, it uses the thumb to fire. And it’s been classified as a “medical device” by the FDA.
  12. If you’re really intent on avoiding any confrontation, you can try leaving some money or valuables on a table near your door or window and hope that anyone breaking in will simply “take the money and run.”

Hopefully these suggestions will provide you with some new options for self-defense. If you are really interested in home defense, you may want to take some advice from an Army Ranger. The porchlight had been set up in such a way that it would turn on when the user turned the switch on. However, if the switch was turned down, it would emit an explosive charge. That should be enough to dissuade anyone who wants to smash the front door. It’s important to consider self-defense as you may need it in the future.
