Bad teaching and myths about golf can ruin your game and cause you to make mistakes. Putt-putting is the most important skill in golf. Pendulum putting is one myth that can hurt your game. There are many appealing ideas to pendulum putting…on the surface. A pendulum stroke is rhythmic and smooth. However, there are solid reasons this technique is not logical. You might ask: “What about all those tour pros who swear by the pendulum technique?”Simple explanation: Many of those who endorse the use of pendulums aren’t doing the right thing. Many professional players can be very talented, but they are often ignorant of their techniques. The same mistakes, myths, and teachings that are common to professional players may also be used against them. You can become a great putter if you decide to disbelieve this myth.
A good golfer once said that there was one thing they should stop writing and talking about. It causes confusion for beginners. This is the theory of the pendulum stroke. Each demonstration is impossible to accomplish, regardless of how they are described or expressed. Bobby Jones
Let’s start with the basics of putting. The college team used this information once. This information, together with the Master Pre-Shot Routine, were key to how the team won 3 of 6 tournaments and placed 2nd in 2 more. They also finished the year national ranked, beating four of the top 20 teams. The stuff doesn’t kinda, sorta possibly work. It absolutely does! The purpose of this ad, other than for the author’s ego, is to benefit you the reader. Follow the advice and you will see a rapid improvement in your putting skills.
I HAVE A CRITICAL CONCEPT THAT YOU NEED TO UNDERSTAND. Different styles are used by golfers. Some believe style doesn’t matter… regular length/belly length, open/closed stance, Vardon/reverse overlap grip, hands together/split/strong/weak, left hand low…anything goesIt’s true! “It’s your thing, do what you want to do”! You can’t be more true!
It would be foolish to have such a disorganized approach to your business or personal life. Both style and the fundamentals are crucial. There are both fundamentals and style for putting, just as there are for swing. The good news is that there are some really great things! The foundations of your game can help you integrate it into an integrated package.
Let’s get to the putting information! The pendulum, while a very simple device, is much more complicated than the biomachine that we must use. A pendulum is not the same structure that makes up the human machine. Pendulums are suspended from a fixed point, and can swing in one direction only. The constant movement of a pendulum is also dependent on gravity. A pendulum can only be set in motion by an external force.
The problem with trying to use the pendulum technique is that it will always hit the ball, and not at the ball. The good news is that this is the best option! The real problem is what happens to your brain after several misses. When the pendulum is used to put the ball, the face of the putter can often be out of alignment with the target. Misalignment of the face is one problem in putting.
Two points connect the human-putting machine to club via a set of semi-flexible, semirigid links. You can call it a “human putting machine”. “double-pendulum”It is. This doesn’t look anything like the clock hanging on it. The biosystem of linked can move in multiple directions, and often does. Muscles power the system, sometimes doing what we ask and sometimes acting as if they have their own mind.
As with other parts of the game like putting, it is easiest to learn in bite-sized chunks that can be combined into one larger movement. After mastering the fundamentals, you will be able to learn other skills such as speed reading and green-for-break. You are doomed if you cannot make consistent strokes. Modern, well-conditioned greens are best suited for the arm/shoulder technique. It is easy to master the mechanical basics that allow for a consistent, reliable shoulder/arm stroke. The first step is to be able to duplicate the stroke mechanics without any mental effort. The basics of putting are simple skills that enable you to strike straight, ten-foot puts.
To put, there are three requirements:
1. The putter should be moved relatively straight backwards and through the hole. “impact zone”You can do it. Studies have shown that a stroke isn’t necessary. Putts are not affected as significantly by stroke path mistakes than clubface directions. The key to controlling your stroke path is using the right pre-putt foundations.
2. Place the putter face in line with the path/target at impact.
3. The second is to control speed so the putt moves in accordance with your mechanical requirements. Controlling speed involves both “feel/touch”Strategy and more later.
The foundations of solid mechanics are the pre-putt basics.
1. The stroke path should be aligned so that the shoulders are square or parallel to the ground. Keep the knees under your shoulders. Many players will assume this is a close stance. This is a mistake! Do not putt your feet.
2. 1.Keep your eyes on the ball. 2.Keep your hands under the shoulders. 3.Begin weight just below the ball of the feet (flatfooted); elbows slightly bent.
3. The grip should be flat on the bottom hand. It is recommended to have a very square top hand. The putter’s head will not follow an arc if the top hand is opened. The top hand helps to keep the face of the putter square regardless of stroke path.
4. Putter’s face must match the stroke path.
5. The ball is usually in the direction of the left eye (L/R) and generally faces forward.
It is easy to repeat a stroke from a good position.. There is one more important fact: stroke path does not have any influence on the direction that the ball rolls. Dave Pelz correctly explained the phenomenon. You can forgive 90% of stroke path mistakes. It is worth the effort you have put in to creating a stroke path that works. Training aids can be costly, ineffective and frustrating. It is a completely different story when you are trying to align your face at impact. The ball’s trajectory is affected by about 90% of all face errors. This is a huge implication for learning and practicing. This is the bottom line: focus on striking your ball accurately and don’t worry about keeping it in the straight or arc. The most important aspects of putting are controlling speed and face direction. Both are essential for putting. If you do one thing right, then you can kill two birds with the same stone. We must learn to putt correctly because face direction is directly related to the stroke direction.
You must move your putter using the pendulum method by rocking your shoulders. Too much movement! You can get into trouble for any reason you are moving! The same principle applies to using a “putt from the elbows down” technique. Now, you can use your flexed elbows at address to reduce body movement. Push the thumb’s top back to complete the stroke. Let’s clarify the meaning of thumb. Your thumb is 18″ long… from the tip of your nail all the way up to your elbow. You push the putter away by pushing the forearm back. The flexion in the elbows not act as “extenders”, limiting the rocking of the shoulders. Most of the movement is in the forearm, not the body. The forward stroke is the opposite. Just accelerate the bottom thumb (forearm) into and through the back of the ball. This “Push/push” movement is hands free and body limited. On longer, lag putts, the body assumes a greater role. This “Method” is predicated on being in a correct address position that allows it to work.
There is an extremely effective method for controlling both face direction and the speed. The technique involves nothing more than controlling the rhythm of the stroke. “Striking” into and through the back of the ball CAUSES the putter to “Place square” to the target path! If there is a magic move in golf, this is it! The technique is as simple as using a “Slowwww, and GO!” rhythm. Please note the tricky spelling and punctuation. “Slowwww” means taking a deliberate and very slow backstroke. “Annndd” means using a smooth transition between the backstroke and the forestroke… don’t hurry the forestroke. And GO means striking into and through the back of the ball. The time it takes to make the backstroke should be about three times longer than the time it for the forestroke. The length of the forestroke is ALWAYS about three times longer than the length of the backstroke.
Taking a slow backstroke forces you to accelerate the putter. Proof that you accelerated is seen a longer length forestroke. Learning this technique is easy, but it takes intention, focus of attention and discipline. Learn this stroke technique in parts, on lag putts that are not aimed at any hole. Take away the target and you can focus on your technique.
Part one is to practice making ultra slow backstrokes… you don’t even need a ball. Part two is to learn how to make a smooth transition between the backstroke and forestroke. In the early stages of practice, you might try to make a deliberate, but fractional pause at the limit of your backstroke. Later, you can eliminate this pause. Finally, your most important learning task is to “Hit the ball” with an accelerating stroke. How far the ball rolls will depend on the length of the backstroke, NOT on the amount of power/force you use. All putts will use the same amount of muscular force. Using this technique, “Please feel” is the same for all length putts… you simply strike through the back of the ball.
Controlling distance becomes a matter of practicing different length putts on different surfaces to learn how much backstroke is required. So, how long should the backstroke be and how do you develop the “Touch is required to regulate the speed of a golf putt
The second part of this question must be answered first. Practice, practice, and more practice are the keys. You will develop an ability to feel the greens at different speeds over time. The key to controlling distance is to allow your subconscious feel of feeling control over the length of your backswing. This is something that you probably already do. Simply, you need to refocus your attention on more productive questions.
What is the best way to know if this technique works? There are three main things you will observe. First, your backstroke became more natural and comfortable. In second, your confidence grew so that you no longer need to rush the forestroke. You will also feel more in control and have a better contact with the ball. Before you even look up, you will be able to see where the ball is heading!
